Easier Laptop Repair with UPS Store Integration

    September 3rd, 2009

We’re always looking for ways to improve our customer experience, and for the last several months, we’ve been working on a feature to do just that.

For those of you who do not know, in addition to selling parts for self repair, we also have a full featured send-in repair service for Mac laptops, iPods, and desktops. Click here to go to our repair center home page.

Prior to today, we had two options for getting your machines to us:

1.) We’d ship you a box to send in your unit.

2.) You shipped your unit to us in your box.

Today we’re proud to announce an even easier way to send in your unit: UPS Store Drop Off. Now, with our integration with the UPS Store, all you have to do is take your Mac laptop and your work order from us to any UPS Store location. That’s it. They’ll box up your unit, send your unit to us, and charge our account for the shipping charges.

What’s the cost for this new service?

It’s Free for Ground shipping and $75 for overnight shipping, and yes that includes the return shipping cost.

As we’re just unrolling this new program, it is currently only available for Mac laptop repair. In the next few weeks we’ll open the program up to iPods and desktops as well.

iPhone’s Grandma Goes Under the Knife

    September 2nd, 2009

If the iPhone 3GS had parents, its father would be the iPhone 3G, and its mother would be the 1st Gen iPhone. If it had a Grandma, that would unequivocally have to be the Apple Newton. We’ve done teardown videos on all of the iPhone models, and so it seemed only logical (and respectful) to give the Newton the same honor.

What’s the Newton you ask? The Newton was one of the first PDAs available circa 1998. It was revolutionary and ahead of its time. The system had handwriting recognition, applications, data storage, etc.. It was a Palm before the Palm was cool.

The main goal of the Newton was to revolutionize personal computing. At the time, the project was considered a failure in many ways as it did not live up to its goals. However, looking back, the Newton was the springboard for a lot of the current technologies we enjoy today. For example, the software that goes into iPods was developed by some of the Newton creators. Also, the handwriting recognition engine from the Newton crept into the Jaguar operating system in the form of Inkwell and is rumored to be the base of the handwriting recognition for the rumored Mac Tablet.

So here’s to the iPhone’s Grandma and her progeny:
