  • Live Teardown of the New Nano with Camera

    September 10th, 2009

    12.26

That’s all for the live blog. Stay tuned for the video take apart.

    12.12

The speaker, headphone, and hold switch is all one assembly and is connected to the logic board.

    12.10

The LCD is attached to a metal frame which surrounds the logic board. You’ll first need to disconnect the LCD cable. Then you can slightly bend the metal frame to get the logic board loose.

The speaker is extremely thin and just peels off and is held on by two solder joints to the headphone jack / hold switch assembly.

For the battery, there are three solder points and a cable, so don’t expect an easy battery replacement if you ever need yours replaced.

With the internals removed, you can then start disconnecting and removing components from the main logic board. The camera is connected with just a ribbon cable on the back side of the board. It is easy to pop off with a flat tool or even your fingers.

    11.48

You can then slide the internals out through the bottom of the case. It is a tight squeeze so make sure no cables are snagged anywhere.

    11.43

There is a small white clip between the camera and the microphone keeping it stationary. You need to use a small paper clip or tack to pop it out.

    11.40

Removing the camera is next as it is holding the internals inside the case. The camera is tricky to get out. You just need to work a very thin razor around the edge of the plastic covering until you can pop it loose.

    11.37

Next up is removing the glass covering the LCD. There is some adhesive around the whole edge of the glass. Use a flat tool at the top until you can get the glass loose and then you should be able to work the glass free.

    11.31

There are three screws on the bottom that need to be removed as well that hold in a metal bracket for the dock connector.

    11.27

Next up is taking out the clickwheel. Get your flat tool in between the clickwheel and the case enough to rotate the clickwheel and pop it free. The clickwheel is connected with a cable to do the main logic board. Be careful not to rip the ribbon cable.

    11.08

There are two screws at the top holding the internal hold switch. The internal hold switch has a small ribbon cable attached going into the main body of the iPod.

    11.05

The first step in taking it apart is to take off the bezel at the bottom and the top with a flat tool such as a spudger. The hold switch is attached to the bezel at the top and should just fall out.

    11.03

We have chosen the black iPod Nano to take-apart. The new revision has a much larger screen made for taking pictures and recording videos.

    10.56

Fedex has just arrived with our new iPod Nano. We should be getting some pictures in a moment.

    10.38

All set, just waiting for Fedex who should be here very soon….

Today we’ll be doing a live blog of the Teardown of the new 16GB Nano with camera.

We should get underway between 10:45 A.M and 11:15 AM CST.

You can tune in to the live blog at this page or at this link.

No. We got two of them. One for the take apart, and one for the giveaway. Don’t worry, the giveaway one is brand new, unopened!

      Bradley,
So is the unit that was taken apart the one that is being sent out to the winner of the give-away? ;-)

      Bradley Says:

Yeah, we took it apart as soon as we could…it’s what we do. You have to figure out things as you go along. Sometimes it’s easier than others. This nano presented a few difficult spots such as figuring out we had to remove the camera first. The Nano did go back together and is working properly :-) There are a some minor scratches on the unit though, but that’s just part of the game when you’re figuring things out.

Let me see if I understand this correctly….
FedEx delivers the Nano at 10:56 and you start taking it apart at 11:03?

      Questions:
      1. How did you know all the tricks to do it, considering it was just released?
      2. Did it get put back together?
      3. If yes to #2, does it work?

      Thanks!

      Ron
