I need the charging plug inside a MacBook A1342

Powerbook Medic

@Luke - the one in the very corner is the microphone. The similar connector right below that is the speaker.

Luke

Can you tell me what the cable is that you are unplugging at 4:21 in the video? You remove two cables there, the first one is the 3-prong right speaker cable, what is that second one? The connector snapped and I need to replace that cord.

Smith

@Powerbook Medic - Thank you very much for your helpful reply!

Powerbook Medic

@Smith - For the screws, it's not a huge concern, just make sure you are using the correct screws and tighten until it seems secure. As far as static electricity, it is best to power it down and remove the battery, and ground yourself. Our techs will use anti-static wrist straps and anti-static mats while performing a repair for a customer.

Smith

Also, my mother has been pestering me about getting shocked when I take apart various electronics around the house. (◔_◔) I always power down the things I take apart, but do you have to take any more precautions than that with a macbook? I notice that you just use your hands in this video. Is this something I need to worry about?

Smith

When you remove screws, do you have to worry about torque? I know that hard drives require a screwdriver with a certain torque setting to put the screws back in so the machine works properly. Does this also apply to more general parts of taking apart the computer, like taking off the back cover and screws holding in the LCD? Thank you so much!

Hi. I think the lcd flex of my macbook is going to broke up. Do you seld it?

Powerbook Medic

@Michael - about all it can be is the LCD cable unless the logic board was damaged during the repair, so I'd start by reseating and checking the cables.

Michael

I replaced the keyboard/bottom case because the keyboard was not working. Now, the screen is not working. What do you think could be the problem?

Powerbook Medic

@Moonstruck, it can be underneath the drive or on the bottom side of the logic board.

Moonstruck

Is the pram battery mounted below the super drive? I am trying to fid a pram battery for macbook A1342. Please help. GREAT VIDEO ,Best yet!!!!

Powerbook Medic

@fadhly - the foam should just peel off if you hold down the cable securely. for the connector, you would need to solder it back. We offer a logic board repair service in the Send-in Mac Service dropdown or you can replace the board.

fadhly

I've got 2 problem. i would like to change my logic board but then i got stuck in disconnecting the lcd because unlike in your video there's a foam covering it. secondly i mistaken the way i supposed to disconnect the rear speaker cable(it supposed to leave some kind of a socket that connected to the circuit but apparently i took it off too!! soldiering it would be impossible because the circuit is too small... HELP!!)

Tried putting mine back together. It starts, but the keyboard isn't working. Am I reconnecting something wrong?

Excellent Video !

Powerbook Medic

@Plamen - there isn't much you can do with it. There is a small market on eBay that may be willing to buy non-working boards.

Plamen

I just purchased a logic board from you guys, because main burnt out on me.I put the one I got from you and everything work just fine.Do you think I can use the old logic board for parts or there's nothing I can dismantle anymore. Anyway.Thank you very much for supplying me so fast with that part. You just saved me from spending $1700 for a new computer.Happy I found you guys.God bless you.

How do I replace the lcd cable that connects to the LCD. I messed it up when trying to replace the LCD.

Rick

How many volts/watts does the computer battery hold?

Powerbook Medic

@pedro - it can be the power adapter, the magsafe board, or the logic board. It is hard to say which it is without replacing some parts. The adapter is the easiest to test if you have another or have a friend with a macbook.

pedro r

My mac won't power on at all, the light on the magsafe doesn't come on either , I have a black spot on the screen but It's been like that for a few weeks . I'm willing to order whatever is necessary to repair it but I need to know what's wrong . The last time it was working I plugged it in to charge and the next morning it wouldn't power on and magsafe light was off.

Powerbook Medic

@Pedro - sometimes it may stick a little, but it should pop off with not a whole lot of effort. If you are uncomfortable doing it, you can send it to us for repair.

Pedro

I have removed the first 8 screws, but i still not been able to remove the cover, what should i do?

Powerbook Medic

@Carl - no, once you get to the point of the part you need to replace, you can stop there, replace it, and then work your way back putting it together.

Carl

If I just need to replace a cracked screen do i just need to remove the battery and follow the last minute or so about the screen?

Powerbook Medic

@ACMT - ESD is important. They have ESD mats to prevent static charges as well as wrist straps.

ACMT

Where is your ESD? I haven't heard the single most important step before you proceed to touching the components....... Do you always work on the MLB without ESD protection????

Powerbook Medic

@Twotone - I would make sure the LVDS cables aren't getting pinched in the hinges, because after that, you've done the appropriate troubleshooting and the only thing left is a damaged logic board. Possibly the display cable connector has some damaged pins or something.

Twotone

I replaced my screen and now the new screen and old screens are Dim. What would cause this? The old screen used to be bright but just cracked. I've tried 2 different LVDS cables other than the original.

After replacing the top case the wifi stopped working. Under wifi it says "wifi hardware not installed." The bluetooth is working. Any ideas?

Mike

Can you replace just the keyboard or do you need to replace the entire top case?

Powerbook Medic

@eeh - you have to unscrew it from beneath the trackpad, so you have to take apart the machine until you can get to that point.

eeh

What is the easiest way to replace the trackpad on the macbook 13inch.

Richard Cooper

most excellent Thank You

Powerbook Medic

@Ntxga - the keyboard comes with the top case, so once you get everything removed from the top case, you can switch it out. It's a lengthy repair.

Powerbook Medic

stingbody

how about the keyboard?.... and i want to download a recovery files for my mac because the cd was gone... were can i download?... thank you..

Powerbook Medic

@Matt - I'm pretty sure it doesn't work with any other key depressed. You can also reset it by taking out the battery and holding down the power button for 10 seconds while unplugged and turned off.

Help Please! replaced a loud fan as per "Installing MacBook Unibody Model A1342 Fan" by Walter Galan on ifixit. Followed ESD precautions etc. Now Mac powers up but just have a black screen. The white LED is on, the hard drive spins up, I tried shining a bright light to see if the LCD was not backlit :no presentation. It stays on and will shut off if hold down power button. So far I removed the ram and reinstalled it. I tried to do a SMC reset, *BUT* unfortunately my left shift key has been none functional for 3 weeks . Will SMC reset work with right shift key depression? I also disconnected &reconnect Lcd cable on the right side of the logic board. the power on led comes on and thats it, no sound when I adjust the volume button please help!

Powerbook Medic

@Soledad - most likely. We'd have to see it in shop to be sure, but that's where I'd start.

Soledad

My children dropped my A1342 macbook on its side and broke off a piece of the case right where the charger is plugged in. Now the charger doesn't work at all - do I need to replace the magsafe board?

Powerbook Medic

@Robin - great news. never would have gone with the scotch tape as an issue :)

Robin

When the keyboard connector was attached correctly (without the scotch tape), the right shift key began to work. Thanks for your suggestions and your repair guide!!!

Robin

Thank you so much for your suggestion of the new top case for a solution to the right shift key problem. When I took apart the A1342 I found the keyboard connector was attached to the logic/motherboard (not sure which is correct) with scotch tape!

Powerbook Medic

@Robin - if the key still physically appears to work but just doesn't send the signal, it is most likely going to need another top case.

Robin

I posted my question to the wrong macbook video. I have a late 2009 macbook with polycarbonate unibody and internal battery. One key (R-shift) does not function. I've checked universal access and keyboard features and everything is turned off or not selected as a function key. When I attach a wireless keyboard, the R-shift key works fine on the wireless keyboard. I'm trying to determine if this means I a). have a single R-shift key problem that can be fixed by replacing it or b). if it is a more complicated (expensive) problem like c). the motherboard or d)needs a new top case. The top case and motherboard were already replaced last year(2011) under warranty--after that is when the shift key stopped working. The hard drive and battery failed this year out of warrant and were replaced. The lack of a R-shift key makes it difficult to type and using a wireless keyboard long term is not an option. This video didn't seem to tell me when/how to replace the top case. Thanks

I have a a1342 macbook. I would like to buy a logic board. Are the logic boards of the same make a1342 interchangeable?

Powerbook Medic

@Papa - the sleep light staying on is usually indicative of a logic board issue. I would first try reseating the RAM though just to make sure it isn't something simple.

Papa

I am uncertain if i have a broken logic board or top case. When the pc is turned on, the fan comes on and i can hear the HHD running, however there is no display and no sounds or chimes, the keyboard appears not to be working. The sleep light is remains on. Whats your take on this?

scorn

if i uy the top of the keyboard from this site does it come with those pad looking things they connect to the mobo in 2 diffent areas and are held to the keyboard with adhesive

Powerbook Medic

@scorn - based on your description that sounds like the speakers. Those come with the top case. You may be able to find them separate used, but I haven't seen them.

scorn

i took apart my laptop and noticed some weird looking pads atatched to the keyboard, they attach to mobo an one is directly under the shift button and the other is under the enter button can you tell me what this part is cuz its wire is riped

Mick

Thanks for that PM. It's actaully quite easy to change out the top case following the video (hint, make sure you have all the correct screwdrivers before starting :-(

Aivaras

Aivaras

I dissasemble my MacBook, but didn't find internal battery. Where it is? Thank you in advance :)

Powerbook Medic

@Mick - yes, its pretty much a complete disassembly except for taking the display apart. You still have to take the display off the base, however.

Mick

Hi guys, great site. How do I replace the A1342 top case (keyboard). Your video doesn;t explain it. Do I have to pull it all apart?

juliana

Hello!on my mac doesnt work the screen ,and backlight, but all cables and screen is new, maybe problem is in inverter board?thanks

Powerbook Medic

@Jason - you can do it without removing everything.

Jason

In order to remove the lcd screen, is removing the rest of the interior parts (logic board, hard drive, etc.) necessary, or can it be done without removing them?

Powerbook Medic

@Ken - its really best to replace the top case. If you can find just the keyboard for sale, you would have to get the top case off and remove all the screws on the underside.

Ken

how would I replace the keyboard on A1342 macbook. Do I need to take the back panel out and remove some screws or just pop open the top part?

Powerbook Medic

@tomy - if you are referring to the key, you can just pop the key off and replace it.

HELLO I HAVE THE A1342 AND THE SCREEN IS BLACK.I CONECTET IT WITH MINI PORT TO EXTERNAL LCD AND IT IS OK. WHEN I OPEN A TORCH TO THE SCREEN OF MY MACBOOK I CAN SEE IT IS WORKING.THE PROBLEM IS THE BOARD OR THE LVDS Display Cable. THANK YOU.

Powerbook Medic

@Geovany - you'll have to take it almost completely apart to do that. You'll need to get to the point of taking off the display, then you'll need to take out the LCD and cables.

Geovany Ortega

I Want To replace the "MacBook Back Case w/logo White 13", any vids on how to do that??

Michael

How do you reattach the screen? I can't get it to latch back on.

Jon

So to remove the LCD, I don't have to do the whole logic board removal etc? Its just the last step (unless of course I manage to unplug the display cable)

Riley Sykes

How would you upgrade the RAM? also, how much RAM is it capable of?

Powerbook Medic

@Ken - the white bezel is held on by several plastic clips. It is best to detach the clips from the bezel and install them into the metal frame, then you can pop the bezel back on.

Ken

how do you re-attatch the white lcd bezel after it is removed if it is help on with adhesive tape?

Powerbook Medic

@greg - that usually means the display cable is not connected properly to the back of the LCD or the logic board on the other end.

greg

Just replaced my lcd screen but it is just blank. What did i do wrong?

Hi I have a macbook and water was spilled on it. It turns on, the fan spins, the light comes on, but nothing else. You can see that the screen is on, and there is a dark 3" band in the middle. So is it a LCD or logic board? thank you

Powerbook Medic

@Jason - We sell and most hardware stores sell a tri-wing screwdriver. It should be in the tools product list over to the right.

Jason

What size driver should I use for the tri-lobe/wing screws?
