@Luke - the one in the very corner is the microphone. The similar connector right below that is the speaker.

Can you tell me what the cable is that you are unplugging at 4:21 in the video? You remove two cables there, the first one is the 3-prong right speaker cable, what is that second one? The connector snapped and I need to replace that cord.

@Smith - For the screws, it's not a huge concern, just make sure you are using the correct screws and tighten until it seems secure. As far as static electricity, it is best to power it down and remove the battery, and ground yourself. Our techs will use anti-static wrist straps and anti-static mats while performing a repair for a customer.

Also, my mother has been pestering me about getting shocked when I take apart various electronics around the house. (◔_◔) I always power down the things I take apart, but do you have to take any more precautions than that with a macbook? I notice that you just use your hands in this video. Is this something I need to worry about?
Smith

When you remove screws, do you have to worry about torque? I know that hard drives require a screwdriver with a certain torque setting to put the screws back in so the machine works properly. Does this also apply to more general parts of taking apart the computer, like taking off the back cover and screws holding in the LCD? Thank you so much!

Powerbook Medic

@Michael - about all it can be is the LCD cable unless the logic board was damaged during the repair, so I'd start by reseating and checking the cables.

@fadhly - the foam should just peel off if you hold down the cable securely. for the connector, you would need to solder it back. We offer a logic board repair service in the Send-in Mac Service dropdown or you can replace the board.

I've got 2 problem. i would like to change my logic board but then i got stuck in disconnecting the lcd because unlike in your video there's a foam covering it. secondly i mistaken the way i supposed to disconnect the rear speaker cable(it supposed to leave some kind of a socket that connected to the circuit but apparently i took it off too!! soldiering it would be impossible because the circuit is too small... How many volts/watts does the computer battery hold?
Powerbook Medic

@pedro - it can be the power adapter, the magsafe board, or the logic board. It is hard to say which it is without replacing some parts. The adapter is the easiest to test if you have another or have a friend with a macbook.

My mac won't power on at all, the light on the magsafe doesn't come on either , I have a black spot on the screen but It's been like that for a few weeks . I'm willing to order whatever is necessary to repair it but I need to know what's wrong . The last time it was working I plugged it in to charge and the next morning it wouldn't power on and magsafe light was off.

@Twotone - I would make sure the LVDS cables aren't getting pinched in the hinges, because after that, you've done the appropriate troubleshooting and the only thing left is a damaged logic board. Possibly the display cable connector has some damaged pins or something.

Help Please!
replaced a loud fan as per "Installing MacBook Unibody Model A1342 Fan" by Walter Galan on ifixit. Followed ESD precautions etc. Now Mac powers up but just have a black screen. The white LED is on, the hard drive spins up, I tried shining a bright light to see if the LCD was not backlit :no presentation. It stays on and will shut off if hold down power button.
So far I removed the ram and reinstalled it. I tried to do a SMC reset, *BUT*
unfortunately my left shift key has been none functional for 3 weeks . Will SMC reset work with right shift key depression?
I also disconnected &reconnect Lcd cable on the right side of the logic board.
the power on led comes on and thats it, no sound when I adjust the volume button
please help!

I posted my question to the wrong macbook video. I have a late 2009 macbook with polycarbonate unibody and internal battery. One key (R-shift) does not function. I've checked universal access and keyboard features and everything is turned off or not selected as a function key. When I attach a wireless keyboard, the R-shift key works fine on the wireless keyboard. I'm trying to determine if this means I a). have a single R-shift key problem that can be fixed by replacing it or b). if it is a more complicated (expensive) problem like c). the motherboard or d)needs a new top case. The top case and motherboard were already replaced last year(2011) under warranty--after that is when the shift key stopped working. The hard drive and battery failed this year out of warrant and were replaced. The lack of a R-shift key makes it difficult to type and using a wireless keyboard long term is not an option.
This video didn't seem to tell me when/how to replace the top case. Thanks
