@Radu - Are you getting a picture on the LCD but just very dim? If not, it's more likely a LCD or logic board issue. If you do see a dark picture and just not backlight, it can be the backlight on the LCD itself, the inverter cable, or a bad replacement inverter board in most situations.

Radu

Just received my inverter for the backlight screen and installed it but still no light. I took it apart and checked all the cables from the mother board to the inverter and to the screen and they seem to be fine. Do you guys have an idea what it could be? Thanks in advance

Justin

If you just recently replaced the screen, verify the connection. I just swapped mine out last night and it was black, but if I put a light over the screen, I could see every thing. Today I pulled off the inverter cover and pushed the connection in fully and I felt it connect. It then lit up.

my MacBook (13-inch Mid 2007) wouldnt turn on so i was told to take battery out and put on charger cord and told me to hold shift control options and hold power, and it cuts on but the screen wont cut on

Powerbook Medic

@Emah - you can check and see if it is booting up by adjusting the volume and seeing if you can hear the sound. If it is booting it is more likely to be an inverter board or LCD issue. If it is not booting, it is more likely to be the logic board. There are a lot of possibilities so it may be best to get it professionally diagnosed if you don't have access to parts to test.

Greetings. anyone ever update the 1811 to 4gb of memory - but get a black screen, solid light and no chime on attempted startup? When I use 1 2gb chip and 1 512mb chip it works great... but nothing works when both 2 gb chips are in. I've swapped chips and it's not the memory. stumped. Thanks for a response?

My MacBook A1181 Late 2006 has started shutting down randomly. It does this when it's fully charged and unplugged and when it's plugged in charging. Where should I start my troubleshooting?

I got a secondhand mac that was pretty roughed up. Gave it a clean etc and sorted out the hardrive and it worked fine. Bought a new battery as whoever owned it previously managed to break it, among other things. Worked brilliant for a couple of months even if it was a bit slow and suddenly it wont power up. Whether its plugged in or not there is no life. Battery is fully charged. Nothing has been done to the mac in the past couple of months since the clean and new battery. Any ideas what the issue is? I remember when it first died id shut it down and when i unplugged the socket it booted back up briefly on its own but was just running, without programmes etc. I couldn't do anything with it except hold down the power button.

Hi, a customer brought in a MacBook A1181 with a very similar problem as already discussed here, namely the back light shuts off when the computer heats up. If the MacBook is closed, after about 30 min. it'll work again for a while. Any idea on the course of action here? Replace inverter first and work from there?

Powerbook Medic

@JasonYoung - it is usually the inverter board, but it can also be the inverter cable or the LCD.

Need help please? My black Macbook 2008 does not light up, but I could still see the content if I use a light or tilt my macbook at an angle. Everything works, but no back light. Is my LCD gone?

Powerbook Medic

@Ab - most likely. You may want to try an SMC reset first just to rule that out. Just remove the battery and plug, and just hold down the power button for a good 5-10 seconds, then just plug in the power and see if it works.

Ab

I have the same model laptop with the video. The problem is it work fine using onlly battery, the minute when I power plug the whole computer will shut down. I change MagSafe adapter but nothing change. Do I need to change the logic board?thanks.

Can I change out the processor on my A1181 early 2009 13inch model? I have changed the hard drive to solid state, then the ram up to 8GB, but I want to get it running faster. At least with an even faster booting than the fifteen seconds it currently takes.

Powerbook Medic

@Matt - typically the light will flash a set number of times which indicates what kind of error it is. One or three quick flashes indicate a RAM issue and long flashes are more logic board firmware issues.

Matt

Odd, I have the exact same issue as Carol, except no sounds at all. When I press the power button, the green light on the right of the camera faintly flashes. If I hold the power button, it continues to flash. Full battery power, no boot. Logic board maybe? do you know what parts fail?

Powerbook Medic

@Carol - it is most likely the logic board.

Carol

Late 2007 MacBook (white) 13". Black screen, no chime on startup, fully charged battery, power light is on. Can hear hard drive spin up. Removed HD and copied data. HD seems fine. Replaced both RAM chips (2 x 1GB) still black screen and no chime. Mobo?

Powerbook Medic

@Melissa - well the only two other parts are the LCD panel and the logic board. The LCD usually goes out in thirds (the bottom or top third would be gone and the other two thirds would be fine). As far as what to do next, the LCD is a lot easier to test than the logic board, so I might would try that first.

Melissa

That key combination does not seem to do anything. The mouse works on the external monitor but that is it. A start up logon menu does not pop up. It makes the login sound but does not provide me with the menu to type in my password. Any other suggestions before I make the hour and a half- (one way) drive to an apple store?

Powerbook Medic

@Melissa - there is a key combination to switch from mirroring mode to monitor extending mode. It unfortunately changes depending on which OS and model you have. It is typically going to be the apple (command) key plus the function key with the two rectangles.

Melissa

Hello! My macbook screen is half white and half blackish with different color lines. If I tap on the sides the picture changes like the lines move and I can see the picture on my screen. Do you think it is the LVDS data display cable?

Powerbook Medic

@eric - it could be the backlight, the inverter cable, or the inverter board. Make sure the cable two wire cable from the LCD is plugged into the inverter board correctly.

eric

It worked. I got it to turn on but the the lcd doesnt light up(although you can see applications on the screen) is it the backlight now?

Powerbook Medic

@eric - it sounds like you bought a complete display. The cables have changed a bit between the years, so it is normally suggested to just replace the LCD itself and use all the same cables. Since you are wanting to do a color switch, it may be tricky, but you should be able to move the inverter board and cables from your original display and just use the black casing and the LCD.

Sam

Important question here: I actually just bought a combo drive from Powerbook Medic for my mid-2007 black macbook. I installed the drive and everything went perfectly, except for the fact that the drive won't read CD's. It accepts discs just fine, spins and then doesn't actually read the disc. Is there some sort of procedure I need to do in the OS to get it to recognize the newly installed component or did I just receive a faulty drive?

Powerbook Medic

@Erik - you may want to check the top case cable that connects to the logic board. Perhaps just your power button is not sending the signal to turn on. Otherwise it is most likely the logic board.

I have an 2007 A1181 that will not power on; it will charge the battery however. I've tried reset of the PRAM, tried all the hold power button tricks. Powerbook Medic

@Diana - you can see what color light you have on your power adapter with the battery in and out. If it is off you should check your power adapter before anything else. If it is showing green, it could be the top case has become disconnected but is most likely a logic board issue.

Diana

I have a black macbook (early 2007), it was working fine earlier this morning. But now it won't turn on at all. What do you suggest I should do? Is it something wrong with my logic board or my top case? I tried taking out the battery and putting it back in, still doesn't turn on.

Powerbook Medic

@Monica - If you can count the exact number of beeps and if they are long or short, Apple has a list of what each beep error code is. Generally though, anything more than 3 beeps is going to be a logic board failure. I would guess your GPU (graphics chip) overheated and died. You may want to send the computer to us to take a look at and fix the board.

Macbook Keyboard Problem "H" key turned to OPTION/ALT Function - Hi PBM, I need your help...PLEASE.... Right now i can only use the "H" key by copying and pasting it, because right now it functions like this - for lower key function - "˙" , and for upper case key  "Ó" it seems like it is having an ALT/OPTION function... my 2008 model white macbook 13.3 inch 2.1ghz processor 120gb hd 2gb ram was working fine for the last two weeks, no freeing no lagging perfect working order. Last night i turn the macbook on click on safari and the mouse began to lag, touch pad had issues with response, then the macbook shut down on its own, after countless attempts to reboot the computer would get no further than about 3 seconds into the apple logo before shutting back down again, this process went on for hours, i removed the battery held power button for 5 seconds replaced battery, safe mode, boot from install disk, reset pram, i spent countless hours looking for solutions and decided to remove the ram and hard drive, checked ram, both sticks fine, put the hard drive in another macbook, worked with no issues, ran disk utility on other macbook with hard drive everything checked out fine, i replaced the drive, same issue, now getting frustrated i bought a new hd, and new sticks of ram, tried booting from snow leopard disk, after 20 attempts the install screen showed up, picked language clicked continue, started installation, 10 mins into it, it shuts off, tried again, after 5 attempts it finally stayed on, finished install, set mac back to my personal preferences, used it all night, put it to sleep, this morning i went to turn it on back to shutting right off again at the boot screen, my only question is, logic board?

Powerbook Medic

@Rob - that means it is not able to find a valid operating system. It could be a corrupt OS that needs to be reinstalled or it could be a dead hard drive. Just boot up from your OS X disc and check the drive with Disk Utility.

@romelee - for the airport, you just won't plug in the middle antenna. The signal range may be impacted, but it'll still work great. For the hard drive, if you are wanting a larger drive, just clone your old hard drive to the new one with software like Carbon Copy Cloner and a USB external enclosure.

Powerbook Medic

Romelee

Thanks guys for the quick response. I'll try to replace it one by one.

Powerbook Medic

@Romelee - it can be the LCD, inverter board, or inverter cable. If the backlight gradual starting going out, it is more likely the cable getting pinched in the hinges. If it went out all the sudden, I would try the inverter board first, then the LCD.

@Alex - for the spinning circle, i would check the RAM and hard drive and make sure they are plugged in properly. it also does that when the OS has become corrupt (usually by powering down improperly) and the disk needs to have its permissions repaired through disk utility. The backlight issue may be the inverter cable.

Alex

I'm havin an big issue after trying to figure out why my backlight keeps shutting off. I was able to turn the backlight all the way down and turn it back up. Sometimes it would be fine after that, but still bugged me. I replaced the inverter, and no change. So I end up replacing the motherboard. Booted up and then the backlight still did the same thing. So I put the original motherboard back in now it has gone to crap. It starts up and lights up a grey screen then shuts the backlight off in about 1-2seconds. But if u use a light all that is on the screen is a apple and a load circle. I leave it on and still just the apple an load circle. So just to dubble check I put the new motherboard in again and now that one is doing the apple and load circle withe the backlight off.. Any idea on what the heck is going on??

Hi PBM. I am having a huge headache with my sister's MacBook Core2 (A1811). She handed it over to me to see if I can fix the problem and I am not really having any luck. The symptoms seem like it goes into sleep mode automatically after boot (I can only see the screen for 1-2 seconds). If I press a button, it boots up then goes back into sleep (the power light pulsates slowly). If I use the VGA out via a screen, I can use it fully and everything works. I have already tried replacing the LCD cable and inverter, but no luck. I now believe it's either a magnet issue in the case, or maybe a logic board error? Does it sound like I am on the right track?

I was recently having a problem with my A1181 not charging from the AC Adapter. I've replaced the battery and just recently purchased (from you) and installed a MagSafe Board. The battery now reads as charging in the Power section of the "About this Mac" dropdown. The problem that I'm having now is that while it does show as charging, I've let it charge for nearly 48 hours now and it won't charge beyond 6%. I've noticed that the UPC Hardware says 'Not Installed' in the Power section and don't know if that would be a cause of the problem. Any suggestions?

Powerbook Medic

@Alex - check and see if you can still see the picture after it goes black. it may just be the backlight going out. If that is the case it is usually the inverter board or cable. If it is truly black, that is usually a logic board issue.

@Emily - just a standard #00 phillips should be fine. The other screws don't really need to be removed to get the top case off, so you can put those back in if you like. Sometimes you can apply some pressure from the front to help get the screws going.

Emily R.

@Sue - if you have an antenna problem, it should still be able to connect if you are standing right next to the wireless router. If it still won't connect, it is probably an issue with the airport card. It may just need to be reseated.

Sue

I dropped my computer a while ago and the wifi stopped working. I tried a pram reset and everything. before it said no airport card installed, and now it says to connect to the airport. I press turn airport on and nothing happens so I removed the airport and added it again. It still does not work. I think it may be a hardware problem. I have another laptop that doesnt work for different reasons but is the same model. I was wondering if I should replace my airport card or the antenna. Also I was wondering where the antenna is loacated. If it is in the screen I can replace the whole screen and not worry about that. Thanks for the help, just want to know what you think my problem might be, if its the antenna or the card. (BTW I dropped the macbook on the corner where the charger input is, next to the airport card, The plastic by the bottom of the screen is a little chipped, but not bad and the plastic by the charger on the main body is a little bent)

By the ram drive I haven't been able to get the screw on the far left out. Its a little stripped now but I dont want to wear it down any more. Do you have any tips for removing the screw or any way to work around removing that screw?

Powerbook Medic

@Russ - so it is 3 total beeps? If so and reseating the RAM didn't help, one or both ram chips could be bad or your ram slots are dirty or damaged.

Russ

Hi, thanks for the previous tip, reset RAM to no avail . Machine continuous to make long beeping sound . Would appreciate any additional suggestion . Thank you

Russ

Thank you will try that

Powerbook Medic

@Russ - if it beeps three times, that is a RAM issue. I'd take out the RAM chips and reseat them.

The sleep light works normally - it's off when the computer is on and blinks when I shut the screen. I checked the top case connection and it was ok. The computer behaves the same with the old RAM.

Powerbook Medic

@vina - check the front sleep light. if it blinks, it may be some bad ram. otherwise most likely there's an issue with the top case cable. it probably came unplugged. you'll need to take the top case off to check it out.

Hi and thank you for excellent instruction videos! After upgrading the RAM on my Late 2007 white 2.0Ghz Macbook the keyboard and trackpad stopped working. There is no response whatsoever, no holding in of keys at startup works and neither does the Caps Lock light. I tried resetting the PRAM as well as the SMC - also to no effect. I switched back to the original RAM units but still no go. What is the next step?

Powerbook Medic

@Kevin - I would check for any dirt or dust that may have gotten onto the connector on the logic board. It will have to be the top case, the cable, or the connector on the logic board.

Kevin

I have a 2008 Black Macbook A1181, and I recently replaced the logic board after one of the USB ports failed. However, after doing that the top case is unresponsive, with the keyboard and trackpad not working at all, and the power button works intermittently. I've visually inspected the ribbon cable and it looks fine, and everything else works on the computer (I checked other things using an external mouse and keyboard). What do you think could be causing this problem?

well, i tried this battery on another macbook white and it was able to boot it up and work fine. The battery connector that i bought is an energy star one because there are 2 pins missing and those are the only ones that fit my logic board - if it had 2 pins more it wouldnt go in. It looks identical to the old one, and both make no difference when installed to the macbook - same effects as shown in video. I guess its the logicboard then huh. Oh well sometimes you get lucky sometimes you dont. Thanks for all the help again.

Powerbook Medic

@fred - two times I've seen that issue. One is on 3rd party batteries. Some just can't seem to power the machine without help but work fine afterwards. 2nd is the battery cable. There are two different kinds (energy star and non-energy star). The way to tell the difference is the number of pins. One has an extra pin on the battery cable that connects to the logic board. Compare your old cable with the new one. After that I'd have to fall back on the logic board having one or two dead contacts.

I spilled a littlebit of water on my macbook pro. Cleaned up at once.. Its working properly but a while after opening, the mouse arrow starts moving by itself and sometimes the arrow moves slow.. And starts clicking on folders by itself... What should i do? Is this a big problem?

Powerbook Medic

@Whitney - the top case itself is pretty straightforward putting that back together. The trackpad cable which I believe you are referring to is connected on the underside. You may have to remove a plastic shield first, then there is a small bar you have to pop up (gently), slide the cable in, then relock the bar.

Whitney

Sorry! I was talking about the top case.

Powerbook Medic

@fred - corrosion usually is a powdery white and sometimes blue. You can try an ultrasonic cleaner, but most of the time it'll require a new logic board.

fred

thanks you again for the quick reply. So you reccomend that i go to a repair shop and let them get rid of corrosion with an ultrasonic cleaning machine? i do own one myself but it is very small, only the size of say a stretched out hand (length and depth). Should i riskit and do it myself? or go to the shop and let them do it? also if i were to look for corrosion (which is the only problem how i see it, as all symptoms point towards the logic board having corrosion where the battery connector connects, how do i notice that is has corrosion (what does it look like?) thank you so much for your help and time and even bothering to read all my stupid problems :)

Powerbook Medic

@fred - that should have fixed those issues. The only other possibility is the logic board itself. It may have gotten damaged around where the battery cable connects. You may want to check around there and take out the logic board and check underneath for corrosion damage.

hello, it's been 6 months since my problem with my macbook (i commented here aswell) and have finally got round to buying the part that was going to fix my macbook's problem. It is a macbook 2.4 ghz penryn model and suffered water damage. suprisingly everything still works fine except for the battery (completely dead, tried in other macbook), charging (bought a new battery, not charging on my macbook), and sleep (when you close the macbook the display stays on). So i was told to buy a new battery/sleep connector - i have installed it, however it has not fixed my problem. What should i do? Thank you for your time and help

very good video...only one obvious mistake. Before removing screws 2,4,7 & 9 your video shows you pointing to screws 2,4,7 & 8...not 9. That's ok...nobody is perfect....especially me. I wished I had found this video last night. Couldn't gain total access and had to remove some 3-1/2" rubber gasket where the hard drive plugs in. Great video with nice directions. However, a friend was following them and took my mac apart accordingly, without realizing that the "slide in"connecter on the far left was a slide. Powerbook Medic

Ok, I will try to replace battery cable and magsafe board, as I think the issue MAY have something to do with power supply, and they just cost me 5$ each. If it should be a logic board issue, I'll just leave it as it is, as I think a reparation would be too expensive, just not worth it...

Powerbook Medic

@Marco - typically no. You can try to download a firmware update from Apple's support site and see if it can overwrite it, but in my experience it usually will not let you. If you have 3rd party RAM you can try it without that, but now it is starting to narrow down to a logic board issue.

Powerbook Medic

@Sarah - unfortunately no. The hinges are scewed into the back case, so it is advised to take off the display to replace the back case.

Marco

@Powerbook Medic: Yes, I formatted both times I reinstalled OSX, and sadly nothing changed. I know the superdrive and LCD have been raplaced on this Macbook, but I don't think they could cause the issue, as they both work smoothly. Is there any way to force-reinstall the firmware?

Sarah

I'm thinking about replacing the back case with the apple logo of my early 2008 macbook. Can I just pop it off by removing the frame around the screen and then freeing the back case with a putty knife or are there screws and things that I should be aware of?

Powerbook Medic

@Dave - the issue with doing it yourself is in case there is something else wrong in addition to that part. You'd have to order something else and wait for it to arrive where if we do it here, we'll make sure everything is tested before sending it back.

Dave

Thank you so much for your great repair videos! If I need to replace my Macbook logic board, would it be best for me to have you repair it (it a pmu issue, according to your expert techs) or buy one of your replacement used ones? What are the pros and cons? It is great to be able to text with a Mac expert !!! Thanks much!

Powerbook Medic

@Dave - its really ok to wait. Nothing life ending will happen when the PRAM dies. Clock and some system settings just won't be saved.

Powerbook Medic

@Connie - it really depends on the extent of the water damage. Typically if its a decently sized spill and the machine no longer works, you'll need at a minimum a new logic board. You can send it to us or take it somewhere to get a professional diagnosis to get an idea on repair cost.

Dave

Hi to all, my 13" macbook A1181 hangs only when I restart it. If I turn it on from off it will start, and it will also work and shut down normally, but if I choose restart from the apple menu it will get stuck with a black screen, the white led on and the fans going. My macbook had some ants living in it for a while whilst travelling. Recently it has been perfoming a litle slower and turning itself off after (a- it gets hot, b- the fan goes mental trying to cool it down). I am aprenhensive about taking things to bits with limited tools / skills. Do you think a good blast of compressed air in any available hole, to clean out any crap would be a good idea? Thanks in advance.

Powerbook Medic

@ Mohan - Most likely the cable isn't properly connected, or it was damaged in the removal process. If the cable is connected, you may need to replace just the cable to get things working again.

Powerbook Medic

@Toni - the gray wire is indeed part of the airport antenna. You need at least two connected to get a good signal. For the camera, there is a separate cable for that. You'll want to just make sure its still connected on both ends and not damaged in the hinge area.

Toni

My husband dropped our 13 inch MacBook a1181 model and the screen went out plus we had fan issues so I took the entire computer but the logic board apart and there was one gray wire that was broken. I believe it is the one connected to the airport card - looked like car battery with one black wire and one gray that connected to it. Now it will recognize only our wireless connection but will not connect - it says connection timed out every time. But since the replacement whenever I open any camera program or FaceTime it says "there is no connected camera" so what did I do wrong and what wire do I need to replace if it is for the wireless internet?

I was taking the Fan Assembly apart and like Melinda I had a mishap with the sliding connector. It was the first one on the heat sink and the the two wires came out right of the connector. Is it possible to just slide those back in or should more be done? Thank you

Powerbook Medic

@Melinda - if you broke it on the fan, you'll need to replace it. If you broke it on the logic board, our repair service can sometimes repair damaged connectors, but you may need to replace the logic board. Yes, you can replace the LCD without taking the entire machine apart, but it can be tricky reconnecting the inverter cable.

@Glosol - if the only light you are getting is the magsafe, it may be a problem with the top case (the power button) being disconnected inside. Usually this only happens with a fall, but you may want to check that. It's fairly easy to get to that point. If the sleep light on the front blinks when you try to turn it on.. it may just be loose ram.

Glosol

I was asked to look at my friends A1181 that she said would not start. It was given to me in a friggin box and was missing a few screws. For some reason she had removed the battery and the trim holding the hdd in place to identify her ram. Then she tipped the computer enough for the hard drive to slide out of the connector and fall out of the computer. She did not say if the impact to the hdd was severe or minor. The computer wont power up or even charge the battery. Except for the magsafe's power supply plug being green, there are no lights or sounds when power is pressed-no orange light, but the green light turns on when plugged in. I borrowed a different power supply and battery from my daughter to test, with same result. I was able to get most of the screws back into their right places, Are there any screw locations that are needed to ground chassis to logic board that I need to pay attention to? or is it the logic board?

@Greg - you can check the logic board side by just removing the top case. You can check the LCD side by just removing the bezel and unscrewing the LCD from the brackets.

Greg

The backlight is unaffected. What I'm really asking is whether the display cable connectors can be checked without a complete disassembly of the laptop.

Powerbook Medic

@Greg - it depends what display issue you are having. If its a backlight issue, it is usually a problem with the inverter cable going through the left hinge. If its a problem with the picture, I'd make sure the display cable going through the right hinge is not getting pinched or not connected all the way.

Powerbook Medic

@Robin - if the key still physically appears to work but just doesn't send the signal, it is most likely going to need another top case.

Greg

Thanks for the videos, they're really quite helpful. Immediately after opening the machine up to clean the fan, I started experiencing intermittent issues with the display. The issue is resolved by moving the top cover back and forth; lately it seems to happen more often and requires more movement. Before I replace the display cable, I hope to find that it's simply an unseated connector. Does one end of the cable come loose more often than the other? Which end is more difficult to check? I've seen some videos that show removal of the LCD without separating the top cover from the hinge. Is there a reason I would not want to do that? If it is indeed possible with my laptop (late core 2 duo, lip around the LCD bezel) I would certainly prefer that to the removal of the entire top cover. Thanks again for some really useful info.

Your video is good. I have a late 2009 13" macbook with a new battery and hard drive. Top case and motherboard were replaced by Apple repair last year under warranty. However, since then the right shift key doesn't work. When I plug in a wireless keyboard, the right shift key does work on the wireless keyboard. Does this mean there is a problem with a single key, or could it need a new topcase and motherboard again?

Hello. Thanks for the helpful video. But when i remove all the screws i can almost take the topcase off, but for some reason it is stuck on the front left corner, next to where the battery connects. I am pretty sure i removed all the right screws. Any idea?

@Rick - I would try to clean it off first with some windex lightly on a cloth. if it appears to be underneath the glass, you will need an LCD at a minimum.

Hi, my daughter spilled coffee on her 13" Macbook and it now has a splotch about the size of two fingers on the LCD. Could the liquid have gotten INTO the actual LCD and damaged it? I'd like to know where to start. Cable, inverter, video card, LCD screen? Thanks!

Hello. I have a Macbook A1181 and the lcd has no light in it. I thought i was the inverter board so i bought a new one and the problem remained. Then I thought it was the lcd, so i bought a new one but the problem remained. Did i bought a defective inverter and lcd or may be other issue. I'm spending a lot of money but i can not solve the problem so far. Pleasehelp me.

@Don - the CPU is built into the logic board, so you would need to change out that to upgrade the processor. You can't put any logic board in the machine as Apple changed them with every release, so you'd have to find one that was released at the same time as yours. SSD upgrades are fine. We sell those in our hard drive category.

@Enrique: I had exatcly the same situation with my black 2008 MB(see my comment from 2 days ago). Unfortunately it was actually the LCD screen which had to be replaced. Inverter and cable were ok. New screen works fine now. I bought a new screen and did the assembly myself. It is not trivial. Follow a guide, be careful and patient and note which screw to put in which place.

Thank you for your answer, the screen is black when I close it and open it again, it goes on and i can see the screen for like 2 seconds, then it goes off again, I have been using my Mac without the battery for the last 5 months, does that have anything to see with this problem? Maybe the dust is causing this?

Powerbook Medic

@Enrique - look real close at the screen when it goes out and see if you can still make out a dark image. If you can, it is going to be a short in the inverter cable or inverter board. If there is no image at all, it may be the LCD or worst case the logic board.

Enrique

Hi guys, I have a 2008 white MacBook, it's been working fine since I got it, but just yesterday the screen went black, and when I close it the little white light blinks, like it's on sleep mode, once I open it back again I can see the images for like 2 seconds then goes back to black again. Last night I left it off for like 45mins and it apparently went back to normal, but this morning it went back to the same, please help! I'm desperate! :/

Powerbook Medic

@Martin - for this model, the top case doesn't need to be screwed in for it to function. If it powers up but the keyboard and top case do not work, it may be a partially torn top case cable.

Powerbook Medic

@Steve - if nothing is happening and the front light doesn't flash, check the light on the plug itself. If it lights up, its most likely an issue with the top case being unplugged inside or the top case being damaged. If the light on the plug doesn't light up, it is either the adapter or the logic board.

Powerbook Medic

@Don - it may be. The power management, however, is built into the logic board so it is hard to say without just trying replacement parts. You may want to have it professionally repaired so you don't have to try one part at a time.

Hi, I have replaced the LCD on my 2008 A1181 MB. Tested everything on Thursday and it worked fine, but the keyboard did not fit perfectly. I have reassembled yesterday to get the cables out of the way for the screws. Now one screw on the back and 2 on the side of the outs case do not fit anymore. I get to the welcome screen, but keyboard and touchpad do not work, while the power button does. Also a USB mouse work. Any idea? I does not seem I have ruined the logic board. Been asked to look at same machine as in the video, I fix Pc's never had a mac before... Machine battery charges etc however when power button is pressed nothing happens. Just got my macbook a week ago. I'm having some difficulties where it appears that every time i remove the battery, the computer does not work for several hours. When it does come back to life, it works just fine and turns on and off with no issue. I did an SMC reset the day i got it and had this issue, now today i removed the battery to upgrade the RAM (10 am) and now (4:30 pm) it still will not turn on or do anything. It is definitely not the magsafe. That is working properly. It is something else to do with the computer itself. I thought maybe the ram was not installed properly, but checked that several times and it is not that either.

@Nash - if the light on your power adapter does not light up, it is usually an issue with the adapter itself or the magsafe board is not connected to the logic board properly.

Received the new screen attached it and nothing i get the beep that it is starting but no light at all on the new screen.. thought maybe i hooked somethign up wrong took it apart and did it again still nothing.. So I hooked up the old one and it came right on but you do notice that it is broken as it looks like a big ink splotch but the logo lights up and the old LCD scren light up.. but I get nothing from the new one. Is there something you have to do to get a new screen to work? I think i was shipped an in compatable version or it was DOA on arrival... ? any suggestions.. would be great. I have a Macbook 13.3/1.83/2x256/60/combo/white. It took a spill, tea to be specific. After drying it out it now starts, boots into MacOS, but the display flickers in terms of backlighting. This is to say that it is bright as it should be but then goes very dim and then bright again. It does this slowly, not like a strobe. Does this suggest a flaky inverter board, a maybe corroded inverter cable connection at the logic board, a corroded display cable connection at the logic board, a compromised logic board, or something entirely different? It passed the series of diagnostic tests you get when holding down the 'n' key at startup. Thanks!

Hi there, I opened my macbook to remove a stuck dvd in the optical drive. But when I reassembled it again and powered it on, the screen flicks for a second, backlitght is off and it goes to sleep mode. So, I removed the keyboard case and tried the same thing. It goes to sleep mode only when the cover is lowered on the bottom case, if I lift it high above with the keyboard connector connected powered it on, it works fine. But when I lower the keyboard it goes to stand by all of a sudden. I thought the key board flex cable might be faulty and disconnected the cable from key board. and after a few trial and error methods I found out that, when the cable is connected to logic board but not to keyboard(cable hanging loose from logic board) when I lower the upper case it goes to stand by. But if I remove the cable from logic board, lowering the upper case has no effect and the system stays fine. Please help me with this issue as soon as possible because my exams are nearing.

Great videos! I'm fixing this laptop for a friend, who said it wouldn't charge and was missing several keys at the charger. Well I ordered a new charger & keyboard, I plugged it in, and the green light came on, and stayed on all weekend. I disconnected it just now as the keyboard arrived, put the new top case on, and plugged it back on, and it the green light isn't coming on, nor is it recognizing the AC charge. The laptop is still working from the charged battery- I'm led to believe it's only the magsafe, as it charged once already. Do you think this is the case, or could it be the whole logic board? Also, does the entire motherboard need to come out to replace the magsafe? Thanks in advance!

Powerbook Medic

@Jose - the top left is going to be the magsafe board. Hopefully it just affected that, but it should start up with the battery if that was the case so most likely there is more severe damage. You'll probably want to look inside it to check for any damage or send it to get diagnosed.

It wasn't the battery. I am using the adapter. actually when u boot, no display but u can still see the picture and then after a few seconds it will sleep. but when plugged to external, it works well. is there a possible solution aside bringing the logicboard for repair? or logicboard replacement. Can it be repaired?

Powerbook Medic

@Luke - that is typically a logic board issue.

Powerbook Medic

@Anonymous - I may be confusing it with another issue, but I was thinking that happens sometimes with 3rd party batteries.

Powerbook Medic

@Aaron - if you aren't getting a picture, but you are getting a backlight it can also be the display cable or the connection on the logic board and the external will still work. If you aren't getting a picture or backlight, that is typically the LCD or logic board unless both cables are damaged.

I recently bought a MacBook A1181 with a non-functioning screen which still has a picture hooked up to an external monitor. I replaced the LCD screen, hooked everything up, and still have no picture on the new screen. I can't really see a dim picture either, so I'm not so sure replacing the inverted board would fix it. External display still works. Could you help with diagnosing the issue? Thanks!

Where to find the sound processor on the logic board and is there anyway to get the sound processor separately without changing the whole logic board?

Nigel Anderson

First, terrific resources, the videos and especially the pdf manual, thanks. Before I start, can I ask if my fault sounds familiar? When lifting the screen from fully closed through to fully open there are certain angles where the screen appears to go black (actually, in a dark room I can still see the screen very faintly). Moving the screen back or forth a little usually fixes it, but it is getting worse, and now the screen is only visible when the lid is only open a little, ie becoming pretty unusable. I was going to look for loose cables first up, but if you have any ideas... Thanks again

Powerbook Medic

@Mike - there are two styles of connectors but both you really just push the cable end down onto the connector on the board. You may want to check and make sure the connector on the board is undamaged as well.

I hope I can get some help here. My Macbook screen flashes grey and it 'bongs' like it is actually starting, but then the screen goes black. It is a 2007 A1181.....MB062LL/A. I noticed it was running hot and the fan wasn't coming on when I thought it should right before this happened. I found a work around for a little while by removing the battery and running it on ac power, but that doesn't help now. Thoughts?

While using this guide I accidenlty pulled the wires from the plug to the MB on the L spkr assembly. The wires are undemaged with the two small prongs but i am unablt to properly reseat them in the plug. Any advice?

Powerbook Medic

@M.A. - this is usually caused by the headphone jack getting stuck in optical mode. This is usually detectable by looking in the port on the left side and seeing a red light on inside. Sometimes you can fix this by repeatedly inserting a headphone jack to get it unstuck. You can check your sound settings in OS X to see what the output is set to. If it is set to an optical device, that is your issue, otherwise it may be just a dead sound processor which would require a new logic board.

On 13" macbook (black 2.16GHz 2007 year model). There's no sound output either for both the MacOSX and Win7..No startup sound(chimes) even. Heard and read that the user needs to repair or replace the entire logic board if the sound does not work like this. May I know what causes the problem and how to identify the sound area on the logic board and what should be done in order to repair the logic board for the matter?

This would be the whole top case not just a cable replacement. Are the plugs on the logic board side the same? thank you!

My wife just purchased a 13" macbook (white 2008 year model). Its running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I tried to install Office 2004 last night. Every time I inserted the disk, it would make a noise that sounded like the optical drive was trying to read the disk, but after a few seconds, it would eject. I tried music cd's, blank cd's and even dvd's and got the same result. could the optical drive be dead? BTW, the optical drive is a combo drive.

Thanks but I mean, step 1 under Display Model in the manual: ¨ "Locate the inverter cable, and using your Spudger gently pry it up to release it from its logic board connector.." For reassembly , I can't find where the inverter cable should fit in on the logic board. Thanks

Powerbook Medic

@ Sheenyie - the inverter board is in the clutch cover beneath the LCD. It is usually wrapped in an orange covering. The LCD plugs into the right side of it and the other side is a small black cable that goes through the left hinge and connects to the logic board.

Sheenyie

I was able to replace my screen but now during reassembly, I can't see where the inverter goes... what does it look like, should there be a plug? Did I pull it too hard during disassembly, and it has become disconnected from the logic board? I am really puzzled as I don't have any spare parts and didn't notice anything coming apart during disassembly. If this is the scenario I fear, could you please advise what the cheapest/easiest options are... do i need to replace the logic board? :-( I went ahead and completed the reassembly without connecting the inverter, and I am able to turn the macbook on, but the screen remains completely black (but start-up sound and capslock light appears). Oh and I have the Santa Rosa models. Thanks for any advice

hey i have been using my macbook a1181 without a battery for about 2 days now (battery was stolen) today i realized my cd drive does not work so i opened up my macbook (a1181) took the drive out, inspected it, then popped it back in (still doesnt work, so i will be ordering a new one). anyway i assembled my macbook together and it doesnt power up at all, no lights, no noises, nothing..the top case cable is connected. what can be the problem???

Powerbook Medic

hey! i appreciate taking time to read my comment and replying with a possible solution for my macbook P.S. your videos are awesome! i am training myself with them so i can repair my macbook! :)

Powerbook Medic

@jc - that would typically be a problem with the display cable getting pinched in the hinge. the cable could already be damaged and rubbing up against the hinge or casing, or it could just be getting pinched by a hinge that got misaligned.

Quick question. I have a macbook a1181 white. I recently purchased this macing knowing some of the keys did not work. I purchased a topcase off ebay, took apart the old and installed the new. Macbook will not power on now even with the old topcase. Tried a different known working charger. Still no power. One think when I took the top case off I went to clean around the sata connector I took the 2 screws that hold that in. There is a little gold cable coming off that broke it seems to run to the front maybe the led indicator that the hdd is working. Would that cause a no power issue? Or something else what do you think?

Powerbook Medic

@club - I would try doing a PRAM reset as well as reseating your hard drive and RAM. After that, that problem typically means the display cable has come unplugged either to the back of the LCD or the logic board.

Powerbook Medic

@jerome - usually what happens is these get stuck in optical mode. You can check your sound settings in the system preferences to see if it is doing that or if there is a red light coming out of the port. Unfortunately the only way to fix it is to keep putting in the jack and removing it until it disables. If that doesn't work, replacing or repairing the logic board is the only solution.

I have a white MacBook 2007. Over the past few years it has developed a small crack along the bottom right side of the top cover. This has not been a problem til now (I think...) I am wondering if the small crack has to do with a new problem that has occurred after cleaning the keyboard. My laptop keeps typing "////////" without pressing any buttons. It will not stop until I press the space bar. It also makes a beeping noise when all of my windows are closed and will not allow itself to go into sleep mode. What should I do? Does it need a new top case?

Powerbook Medic

@tazzeemotto - The screws are screwing into the top case, if you overtighten, it could break the threads on the top case and the screw will just start falling out. As far as the display, the screw shouldn't affect it unless the cable is not routed properly and it is cutting through the cable.

tazzeemotto

@Olav - The A1181 model number covered all the plastic macbooks up to the unibody version and the logic boards are not interchangeable throughout the entire line. There were smaller families that were interchangeable however. The best thing to do is find your model on the model table on the macbook wikipedia page and see which processors came with your revision.

Where can I get just the inverter cables (pink, white) for my MacBook?

Michael

Regarding Kevin's suggestion, I think it may be useful to suggest the importance of somehow placing the removed screws on your workspace so that you will remember which ones go back where. To this, I would mention that the four gray slide-out clips in the base (along the right-hand side above the DVD) easily fall out while you're attempting to remove the top case. If all four fall out then as a newbie you lose the original orientation of the clips and don't know how to put them back correctly. In fact, you might be confused about where they go at all. In removing my top case I found that the metal bracket in the front-left corner behaved as if it wasn't releasing, no matter what. It was just caught in the case and I spent thirty minutes trying to gently pry it out. Finally, thanks for your videos, they're well put together and good enough for getting the job done.

Michael

@Powerbook Medic - Just went through the process of taking apart the MacBook 13" (with basic DVD drive) to clear a drive-related problem related to dropping it (with subsequent/annoying CD-grinding sounds). This particular video doesn't mention that the bracket for that third screw *slides* left and right. After removing the screw it's important to now slide the bracket to the left-most position, releasing the pin on the right-hand side that holds the drive into the case. Otherwise the drive will not come out of the tight space it's lodged into. Also, the location of the third screw seems to have changed from your model to mine. My third screw was about 1/4" to the right of where yours seemed to be. On my MacBook, there's another screw to the left that isn't related to the DVD. This could confuse people. Lastly--and I can't stress this enough--the user shouldn't even attempt this if they don't have a one-piece (not socket-type) "000 phillips head screwdriver". The screws are exceedingly tiny and the spaces involved are tight. If attempting with the average style of big-handled socketed screwdriver there won't be any room to maneuver and the screw head will be stripped.

@ Guy - check the inverter cable connection, may not be all the way in. Check the white connector (plugged in all the way) that plugs in the board covered by the clutch cover and the small black connector (pushed down flat all the way across) that you hookup on left of logic board that you put a black foam pad over.

Hey... I am having trouble getting the top case off right above the optical drive... It seems like it has another screw almost or something holding it too tight.... everything else feels like it wants to come up.

Powerbook Medic

@Vic - that is either a bad battery or it is not getting good contact inside the machine. @brigitte - the blinking question mark means it can't find an operating system, you may want to boot up from your install cd, and open up disk utility and scan the drive for errors.

brigitte

I have a black X through my battery icon. Is it time for a new battery?

Powerbook Medic

@LondonGuy - there is a slight possibility it can be the battery cable, but it'll most likely end up being the logic board.

LondonGuy

Hi. I have a Black Macbook. The battery won't charge but the charger is fine... and so is the battery. So it doesn't look good. Could it be anything other than the logic board?

What tools are required to replace the top case? I would like to know the exact ones to order from your site.

Powerbook Medic

@Ronuel - the blinking folder means it can't find an operating system. You'll need to boot up from your install cd unless you think your hard drive is not installed properly. Intel Macs don't have a bios like a windows pc would have. @whitemacbook - most likely something got shorted out. it could be the battery cable or the logic board. I would probably have it professionally diagnosed.

so a few months ago i shared a charger with a friend and from there on out neither of our computers would stay on without it being plugged in. so i just recently bought a new battery and it worked fine for about 30 seconds then powered off and immediately went back to do the same thing as before. it says the battery is fully charged while plugged in but every time i unplug it, it shuts off. anybody know what this could be? and how much it may cost to fix. thank you!

It's my first time to repair an apple computer. I can repair windows computer. Can someone help me figure out the problem with a macbook a1181. Once I turn the power on the screen was white in there a folder with question mark in the middle. And how can i go to bios setup

Jonathan

@Samantha - what was your solution to the problem? My wife has an A1181 MacBook with a similar issue. Screen seems to almost lose the backlight maybe - you can still discern graphics being displayed, it's just as if it is on the lowest brightness setting/black.

NickT

Ok so I did a serial number breakdown and it says my processor architecture is T7300, but I can't find anything but a T7200(2.0) or T7400(2.16). What problems would I run into using either of those?

Powerbook Medic

@Nick - it is typically on or in between the RAM slots.

NickT

@PM yes I have that one. What I am asking is where on the logic board is the is the LB specific serial number? The one with "EEE" in it?

Powerbook Medic

@Nick - The machine serial number is in the battery bay.

NickT

How do I locate the Serial Number on my logic board so that I can purchase the correct replacement board

Powerbook Medic

@Samantha - It sounds like it is probably something wrong with the GPU on the main logic board. I'd probably take it somewhere or send it to us for a free diagnosis.

Samantha H.

My macbook has been having an issue for a while where the screen will black out for a few seconds while I am using it. It comes back after 5 to 10 seconds and then is good for a while and does it again. It does it at random intervals while in use and typing, etc. Do you have any idea what might be causing this or what I may need to replace? I appreciate any insight as I am trying to determine if I can solve the issue myself or if I will need to take it in to get repaired. Thank You!

Powerbook Medic

@Mitch - I would definitely try that first. The battery cable does indeed have the reed switch on it.

Mitch

One night I came home to find my Macbook (model A1811) sitting in a puddle of water thanks to my brother. I of course let it dry for a few days and at the end of this period I turned it on and was delighted to find that it worked perfectly except that even though the battery seemed to work (when I pressed the indicator button the green lights lit up to show the charge of the battery) the laptop seemed that I couldn't recognize it. I was fine with that as I could still use it plugged in. However, a few weeks later I found that when I tried to use my computer the screen was very dim and after a few seconds it would go to sleep. I could wake it up but it would just go to sleep after a few seconds again. If I turn it off and then power it back up the screen is fully bright and it gets part way through starting up and then goes to sleep. I can keep waking it up and then it gets a little farther along booting up, then it sleeps again. After doing this a few times I will get it started up, but since the screen then goes dim and it goes asleep every few seconds, my macbook is pretty much useless. From what I can tell it looks like my macbook thinks that it's closed. I did some research and it seems that the battery cable is the part responsible for sensing if it is closed or not and also since I have problems with it recognizing the battery would it be safe to assume that this is probably the part busted and the one that I should repair?

Powerbook Medic

@LukeR - that is typically going to be the inverter cable getting pinched somewhere. Check it for any damage from the display to the inverter board and from the inverter board on the left side to the logic board. @Damian - There shouldn't be any cables there. Make sure you have all the screws removed on the back and you should at least be able to open it enough from the front to see where its snagged. @JerryG - logic board replacement is much easier.

JerryG

I have a MacBook with a broken hinge. I aquired another MacBook without a logic board. Is is easier to remove and replace the logic board or remove and replace the entire display?

Damian

Hey Guys thanks for your guides! But...I've got a problem.Tried to lift the top case like you showed, but i couldn't lift it, because there was a cable or hook in the corner where the power-button is and i wasn't able to lift it completly.Tried everything but didn't want to go to rude on it. Closed everything like i opened, but now my fan is very loud-it's getting quiet when I lift my macbook on the side where the power-button is located. Does someone have a clue how i can handle both problems? Especially to open the top case properly! Thanks from Germany

LukeR

It lights up when it is at certain angles or if i push on the back of it

LukeR

I redid the hinge but it still is very dark. Anything else that could be wrong?

Powerbook Medic

@LukeR - most likely the inverter cable got unplugged or is getting pinched in the hinge area. I'd just go back in and make sure it looks right.

LukeR

I had a cracked screen so I bought a screen from Powerbookmedic. I just replaced it yesterday and it worked perfectly when i turned it on. I closed my computer and walked away. I came back later and the screen worked but it was completely dark so I could barely see anything. Is it a loose wire or something?

Powerbook Medic

@DerekE - it sounds like it is most likely a display cable issue so I would check that first. after that, it is probably the LCD.

DerekE

lhonski

hi! how do you manage to fix random shut down and freezes on macbook white? Last time I opened the topcase, I found out that one of the thermistor connector is not connected (a black plastic that holds black and gray cable is broken). After connecting those cables to the logicboard (without the black plastic I mentioned), I only experience rare freezes and shutdown. No freezes sometimes. I also experiencing hard reset and sometimes need to do SMC reset 10-15 times before it boots normally. My pattern is when I hear the dvd drive is making sound that means it will boot ok. My macbook is 2nd gen 1.83Ghz core2duo with snow leopard 10.6.4. Thanks.

Powerbook Medic

@FranzS - you'll have to go into the machine to check. It should be pretty easy to spot if there is any corrosion on the logic board.

FranzS

It wasn't a lot of water/cleanser though, I think just a few drops because I got the cotton soaked to much. So I'm assuming the problem is just the keyboard?

Powerbook Medic

@surferdude - that's a common problem with that port where it gets stuck in optical mode. Sometimes you can fix it by reinserting a headphone jack several times until the light goes off. Other than that, it is a logic board problem and it needs to be repaired or replaced.

surferdude

Are the three screws on the bottom of the macbook the same size? More specifically is the center larger then the back two on the bottom? I'm having trouble putting back the screws after installing a new top case

Powerbook Medic

@FranzS - The keyboard is built into the top case, so if that needs to be replaced, you'll have to replace the top case. With water damage though, it may have trickled down onto the logic board and killed it.

FranzS

EDIT I was cleaning and it got wet.

FranzS

@ Mackenzie - Your inverter cable is likely loose or getting pinched. I'd go in and make sure the connections are secure and the cable is not damaged.

Mackenzie

My MacBook screen does not light up (or very faint) from sleep mode. I have to move the screen back and forth before it will light up again. Do you think the screen cable is loose or the inverter need replacement? BTW, it is the same when powering up. If the screen is faint, I have to move the screen back and forth until it light up again.

Thank you so much. Yes i would probably try that. I am college student and money is the issue right now and having macbook that cant run off the battery is inconvenient. It just wont charge but will run off the battery if there is any charge. Sorry for blowing up your wall.

Powerbook Medic

@Steph - you can. You may want to open it up and see if you just need to clean off the contacts inside.

Steph

Which is pretty expensive, but do you think i should give it a try and try the battery connector because it worked before? Also; sometimes if i have the battery charged from a different laptop, and it runs off the battery without the adapter, but does show the 'x' symbol.

Powerbook Medic

@Steph - we offer free diagnosis and if we are able to repair it, it is $95 plus part cost.

Steph

how much would it cost for you to look at it?

Powerbook Medic

@Steph - With water damage, it is more likely going to end up being the logic board which can be very expensive to repair. I'd advise taking it somewhere or sending it off to us to look at.

Steph

i went to the macbook store and they said that there is water damage but then the last time he checked the macbook was running off the battery just fine, but now that he checked it again the battery symbol just showed X. He said it possibly be the connector or the logic board so what should i do ?

which screw driver should i use to replace the airport card on my A1181 macbook then?

Powerbook Medic

@Mike - The safest procedure is to remove the components. There is a shortcut where you can go directly though the LCD, but it can be difficult and you need to know what you're doing so you don't damage other components.

Powerbook Medic

@tenzin - make sure it is an airport card problem and not an antenna issue. The best way is to just move the macbook directly next to the access point and see if it works fine. If it doesn't you can upgrade the airport card to an n-card available from our site.

tenzin

Powerbook Medic

@Tenzin - if you are connecting fine at close range, that typically means the card is fine and you just have a signal strength issue because of the antenna being unplugged or damaged. You can check the airport assembly video, but we really don't get into diagnosing problems.

Tenzin

is there a way to diagnose it? do you have a video of that. i dont know but it could be my airport card or the antenna. usually these airport problems is the card, right? sorry for all the questions.

I replaced a screen on a MacBook as per video, now it'll only work if the power cord is attached and turns off as soon as it's disconnected. I just replaced the screen I purchased from you and I can see a faint image on the screen but the backlit is not coming on.I took it apart again to check all connections and foremost the inverter wires but it will not come on. I guess the screen is faulty or something else may be wrong that you may be able to help me with.

would you just put the screen back the same way or is there something you might need to do to replace the other screen?

Powerbook Medic

@Mike - yes, you can replace the screen without taking the entire machine apart. It can be tricky reconnecting the cables, but it is possible just by removing the bezel and loosening up the clutch cover.

Is it possible to replace a cracked LCD screen *without* removing the lid from the machine?

Powerbook Medic

@Omalley - Replacing the keys is purely for cosmetic purposes. If the keys do not function, you'll likely need to replace the keyboard / top case assembly.

@stranger - I would try powering the machine down, taking out the battery for awhile, and then trying to boot it up again. If the machine overheated, it may have damaged the main logic board.

2 of my keys stopped working. I bought 2 keys from you and changed them and they still don't work. Do I have to change the keyboard?

Great topcase/keyboard removal vid! With the 'decoy' case screws I can never remember the right ones to remove. A very successful topcase/keyboard replacement, purchased from powerbookmedic. Thanks!

also put something down so you don't scratch your laptop, i use a towel (watch for static and keep yourself grounded) and for the screws i use a some pillboxes its very obvious that they dont care about the laptop by the way its put together on the intro video

These repair guides saved me a lot of money, and even better, gave me the chance to tinker with my Macbook! The only big problem I had was not putting the Memory back in properly. It took more 'push' than I thought it needed. In the end, I successfully replaced my screen with the one I bought from PowerbookMedic. Thanks!!!

@Jennifer - The LCD is fairly straightforward. Just make sure you remember to plug in the inverter cable properly or you won't get a backlight.

I'm not an experienced computer person, but the replacement of a LCD screen does not seem that complicated. Before I attempt the replacement, how difficult is it really? Is it easy to break the cables before u get to the LCD screen.

Just swapped the keyboard on a powerbook - thanks for the guide! Note: in the "Top Case & Trackpad" video, the wrong screw is pointed to at 1:36, but the correct one removed at 2:28. - I started to early :)

@Eshaani - That can possibly be a corrupt operating system. You can try to repair disk permissions with Disk Utility or you may have to reinstall your OS.

No, there is no calibration to make. The screens are plug and play. You can adjust the settings to your liking in the Displays preference pane in System Preferences.

Thank you very much for your videos! I changed my broken display on a macbook 13". Do you know if I have to make some calibration?

Powerbook Medic

It could be that your cable came disconnected after you reconnected it. That cable is also responsible for the power button, so if it is disconnected, you machine won't turn back on.

I removed the top case to clean the fan, then put it back, reattached the ribbon cable... and now my laptop won't start at all. No beep, even. I wonder where I screwed up. Damn. :/

Powerbook Medic

@Malki - It isn't that difficult. Just put it back on top to the point you can reconnect it and then put it all the way on top without pulling it or you may pull it free again.

Really great guide on how to take the topcase off a macbook. My only concern with putting a new one on is the ribbon cable attached to the logic board. Is this an easy thing to attach? Do you have a video that shows this? Thanks again, Malki

Removing the heat sink is not necessary to remove the fan is all Tim is saying. The video is just showing a complete removal of the entire assembly.

this fan removal guide... if u are just replacing the fan... you should NOT remove the heat sink, unless you plan on reattaching it properly
