Hi, I just restored my 2nd generation iPod touch and now I can't get the "Edit Home Screen" pop up window to disappear. When I connect it to different speakers other pop up windows will pop up and I am able to dismiss these windows. After dismissing the new pop up windows the Edit Home Screen window comes back. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

@emiles23 - if you have an iCloud backup, once you've restored it through iTunes, you can go into your iCloud settings on the iPod to download the backup.

@kasim - it could be the LCD cable, the LCD itself, or a low possibility of being the logic board.

kasim

when i strt my ipod only white screen coming.. What should I do..

Powerbook Medic

@Gia - most likely yes. You can see if you can clean out the dock connector or if you are handy you can open it up and see if the docking cable has been disconnected, but that would possibly require some soldering to fix.

Powerbook Medic

@Henry - you really should have iTunes if you own an iPod. You can download it from Apple's website.

Gia

Hope you can help with my problem - just got a 2nd gen & it won't charge. Charger works with my 3rd gen, so it's not that. Tried resetting the 2nd, but that didn't work. The computer doesn't recognize it when connected either - do I need a new logic board? Thanks!

@Pia - you can see the battery price in the part list to the right. That would be your only cost besides shipping to do it yourself. For us to do it for you, we do charge a labor fee. You can get more details on our Send-in Mac Repair page.

Powerbook Medic

Powerbook Medic

@sam - the charging port and logic board are all part of the same assembly. You'll most likely have to replace it.

Powerbook Medic

@Helpme - it is most likely a battery issue.

Powerbook Medic

by switching the logic board out will I lose all the data on the device?

Powerbook Medic

@rocco - if it is not doing anything at all, even being detected by PC and not showing a low battery warning, it is probably the logic board.

Powerbook Medic

@sunshine - with water damage, it is best to open it up and try to see the extent of the damage. Typically you'll need at least a new logic board.

rocco

Powerbook Medic

@Yang - there is some soldering involved and it does require a soldering iron. There is typically enough solder remaining to just heat it back up and reconnect the points. If you do not feel confident doing it, we do offer a repair service and we can do it for you using the Send-in link at the top of our site.

Yang

Do I really need to solder the daughter board on the motherboard? If so, how to;do I need solder iron(or whatever it is called)? Or only somewhat glue, cause I saw perminant strong glue(not the adhasive securing it on the board), and I tried to pick it off a little bit(figuringout that it might be important. Well yeah, that's all. Please take time to figure how tosolder it, although you guys might knew already.anywaythanks!

Powerbook Medic

@Arkee - it sounds like part of your digitizer touch panel has gone bad, so you'd need to replace that. As far the lock switch, you may want to open it up first to see what is causing the issue but you may need to replace the volume and power cable

Arkee

Hi my iPod touch 2nd generation is experiencing a lot of problems. My bar to unlock my iPod won't slide all the way to the right and sometimes doesn't work at all.Whenever it does work, it works just fine but my keyboard on my iPod doesn't seem to type the letters R or D and number 4 and the symbol ; and sometimes my iPod just clicks on random things for about 15 mins when I'm typing something or when I'm using Safari...I need help

Powerbook Medic

@byrdo - the disabled error is a software issue, so opening it up won't affect that. you'll need to boot into DFU mode and restore it with iTunes to reset it.

byrdo

by openning the ipod is there any way the ipod will reset back to factory cause its disalbled

Powerbook Medic

@liz - you should be able to restore it to factory defaults. you will lose everything on the ipod though.

liz

My ipod 2g is locked an I forgot my password. I also don't have the computer anymore that I hooked it up to for the very first time? How do I unlock it?

Powerbook Medic

@Jerry - i would do a factory restore through iTunes just to rule out a software issue. After that though, if the ipod is just going to sleep it could be a faulty volume and power cable, otherwise it is a logic board issue.

Jerry

my ipod touch is a 2nd gen 8gb ,the problem is my ipod seems to switch off by itself and yes the battery is full , i try already doing the reset button but still have the same problem , memory still got a lot of space around 5 gb , can you help me out , thanks

Powerbook Medic

@alaina - that sounds like a very weird issue, and unfortunately weird issues usually turn out to be a logic board problem.

Is there any soldering required in order to replace the logic board flex cable?

Powerbook Medic

@nino - it is most likely a logic board issue.. and if the LCD is messed up too.. it may be too expensive to repair.

nino

Cool. How do I go about fixing my wifi. After water damage, wifi turned grey and it does not work. What would i have to replace for that? The logic board flex cable or there is a wifi cable I can replace? Thank you. Also, how can I get rid of water bubbles on my lcd? The screen works fine but i see a bunch of water bubbles. Thank you

Powerbook Medic

@Alex - it will probably end up being a logic board issue. up to you if it is worth repairing or upgrading to a newer model.

Alex

Hi, another question for you: I replaced the battery on a 2nd gen that wasn't responding. To my relief, it now is responding. However, the new battery doesn't hold a charge and drains out quite quickly. I'm new to soldering, so I don't know if I didn't do it quite right, or if there is a problem with the new battery. I've looked for answers, but can't find anything anywhere. Thanks for your advice, I really appreciate it.

Heather

that's what I was afraid of, thanks!

Powerbook Medic

@Heather - that'll typically require a new logic board.

Heather

If a new digitizer screen does not work, thereby indicating that the actual digitizer port is bad, is there any way to repair that, or does it require a whole new logic board? Everything else appears to work, just not touch.

Chad J.

That's what I was thinking. thanks for answering! Happy holidays. Already tried the reset :( so, ill see if i can find a broken one on ebay, shattered screen, make one out of 2. Its my wifes. lol

Powerbook Medic

@bijaya - it is most likely a logic board issue if you know the battery is good.

Powerbook Medic

@Chad - that's a weird one. I'd do a factory reset just to be sure, but besides that the logic board is the only thing left.

Powerbook Medic

@Chris - it does take some practice on some repairs. If you feel uncomfortable doing it yourself, you can send it in and we'll do it for you.

I have a 2nd gen ipod touch, obviously. lol. Anyway, it works perfect, plays out of the speaker, but when I plug in headphones it wont work, and freezes. It will play if I connect through the charger port, through a dock as well, but no luck with headphone jack. I replaced jack, but same thing. Any ideas? or is the board just ruined? thanks! Good videos

Chris

I would NOT attempt this repair again. This just doesn't work. The screen/glass/digitizer/whatever-you-call-it will easily break.

Powerbook Medic

@Ali - the only other thing it can really be is the logic board. You may want to send it to us or take it somewhere at this point to be professionally diagnosed.

Ali

Hi, my ipod touch (2nd Gen) battery was drained and I haven't used it for a while, I tried to recharge it but nothing happens. I've tried to use the power adapter and even different usb ports of the pc, still nothing happens. What should I do?

Alasdair

Hi, my ipod touch (2nd gen) volume up button is acting like the power button, any help? this has come at the same time as the screen stopping responding so any advice would be great!

Powerbook Medic

@andrew - it depends what is wrong. If it is not powering up, it could be you damaged the battery contacts or the logic board. It should power up without the glass, you just won't be able to do anything.

andrew

i took my ipod apart like you showed in the video but i think i broke something off the logic board will i have to buy a new logic board? and will the ipod turn on while just the glass is off?

SuperTech-IT

@christian - many people think the digitizer is the screen. It's not. If you are replacing the "cracked glass" on your ipod, you want the digitizer, not the screen. the screen is a lot smaller and goes under the digitizer. I would like to give kudos for this great disassembly video. It eliminates the worry about tearing a cable or missing a screw. The upper left screw of the upper circuit board in the one I was working on had a black cover over it, and I couldn't figure out why the board wouldn't let go. Thanks.

@tristan - that would be the digitizer touch panel. It may just be partially unplugged, but in most cases needs to be replaced.

Powerbook Medic

@Jeremy - I would try an LCD first.

Powerbook Medic

@dnsvt - not sure I've ever seen that. If you can do the hard reset, the power button is functional, so you should be able to power it down with just the power button.

Jeremy

ipod dropped in bath. replaced lcd and digitizer, restored. It now works and charges when plugged in to power (not computer) but when unplugged from power, I have to reset by holding down power and home button until apple logo appears instead of just pressing the power button. Is there a fix for that?

my ipod touch 2nd gen is not becoming on and when put into chatge it become hot

Powerbook Medic

@Vincent - it can be the battery or the logic board. They are soldered together, so you may have to replace both to replace one unless you want to do some soldering.

Powerbook Medic

@Jerry - it is possible the battery got disconnected inside. It is soldered, so you may have to solder it back into place. Unfortunately you won't really know until you open it up.

Vincent

Jerry

Hello. Over the weekend I seemed to have dropped my iPod with the screen facing down to the floor. It was working fine nothing happened. But then it started turning off all the way and if I tried to turn it on it wouldn't so I connected it to the charger and it turned on so I thought maybe it's not anything bad. It happened for about three more days. Then one day after I got home from school I connected it to a charger (because it turned off in school) and it turned on but when I unplugged it, it just turned off all the way again, so now I can only use my iPod if it's connected to a charger. I can't connect it to the laptop also, what can I do to fix this problem?

Powerbook Medic

@Rich - there is no hard drive exactly in an iPod touch. They use flash memory which is built into the logic board. To upgrade to 16GB, you'll have to replace the board and if your iPod was working fine before, you can try to sell your old 8GB logic board.

Rich

i have a 8gb i pod i wanted to know if can i put a 16gb hard drive in my 8gb my 16 is broken tho. my hard drive is still good just something i was wondering

Powerbook Medic

@evin - you'll typically need to reset it into recovery mode and restore it in iTunes. You can do this by holding down both the power and home button until it resets... let go of the power once the apple logo comes up and keep holding home until it gets into recovery mode.

evin

hi, i have a 16gb 2nd gen ipod and when i turn it on it gets stuck at the apple sign. how can i fix it?

Powerbook Medic

@peter - that typically means your digitizer is disconnected or needs to be replaced. we sell them ast touch panel assemblies.

peter

hi i have a ipod touch 2nd gen 16gb i cant slide to unlock it or power of.

Powerbook Medic

@JSR - you'll most likely need to replace the touch assembly.

Powerbook Medic

@Shawna - if you hold down the power and home button until it resets and shows the apple, then release the power button but keep the home button pressed, it will go into recovery mode which you should then be able to reset in iTunes.

JSR

I wet my ipod 2nd generation and dried it immedietlt. It was working fine for 2 weeks ,but i cant slide to unlock it.

Shawna

My son just bought what he believes to be a second generation IPod touch from his friend... his friend gave him the passcode to unlock the IPod, but the problem is, the device wont even give him the option to enter it... It's non-responive for the most part. the only thing it will allow him to do, is power it down... It wont register on my macbook pro, or I tunes either... I was wondering if a system reset would fix this, and if so, how would I do it since it doesnt respond to anything but powering it down???

I have Ipod 2g, Replaced LCD and touch assembly. However, the lcd went extremely dim. If I remove the touch assembly and disconnect the lcd, then reconnect lcd, I am good. For some reason when I put it back together it dims again. Is it possible, the ribbon cable from the lcd is shorting from something on the logic board? Should that be taped to the back of the lcd frame? I am at a loss here.

Powerbook Medic

@0mar - it may be a bad battery. That's where I would start or you may want to send it to us for a free diagnosis.

Powerbook Medic

@cathy - it is difficult to say without opening it up and looking for corrosion damage. This model however the dock is part of the logic board, so you'll most likely have to replace the whole board.

cathy

i spilled drink on ipod had 2 cases on it,hard 1&rubber 1,immediatly took theme off&dried it.well it really wasnt even wet but i forgot 2 check the charger plug in hole.{stupid}it worked fine rest of the day but when the battery got low i pluged it in,it showed it was charging it,but it didnt.never did.do u think maybe it fried the battery or the plug in slot or what?what could i try in order 2 figure it out?dont want 2 take it apart really.it looks difficult 2 say the least.

Powerbook Medic

@brandon - No there is not. The storage is just a flash storage chip on the logic board. There's no feasible way to remove it and hook it up to a computer.

brandon

I have a ipod touch 2nd gen, that has had water damage. The pervious owners tried to put it in rice and what not to no avail, i have taken it apart because they want to see if they can recover the information off the hard drive, but it is not recognized by the computer. so i am assuming that either the battery is toast or something else is extremely wrong, is there a way i can plug the hard drive into a computer without the ipod? or am i correct about the battery and i can just replace that and clean the connections and it should work again?

Powerbook Medic

@Giovanni - if the picture looks fine, but you are just having to look through glass cracks to see it, its just the touch panel. if you see any black bleeds or lines in the picture, you'll need the LCD.

Giovanni

I have a problem with my screen I don't know if I cracked my panel or the LCD screen how do I know

Powerbook Medic

@cc - this is a problem with windows detecting the ipod correctly. Make sure you have iTunes installed and try a new cable. Besides that, there may be a logic board issue.

Powerbook Medic

@SC - on the metal LCD bracket, there are two holes where the two pegs on the back of the LCD slide into to keep it secure.

Powerbook Medic

hello, is it possible to swap out the top portion of the logic board ( volume & power buttons, wifi assembly). This is a 2ng gen with a damaged digitizer port. I have another logic board i could use the port from. Basically can the 2 portions be seperated and reattached? Thanks.

Powerbook Medic

@Luke - it is probably an issue with the logic board if it isn't showing anything on the screen and it isn't being detected by your computer.

Powerbook Medic

@john - that would typically mean your home and power button are getting stuck.

Luke

Harmony

I got my 2nd gen wet and i dried it out, it wont go into apps and wont come up on itunes, its not the computer.

Robert

@brian, there are 3 solder joints at the logic board end of the battery's cable that must be heated & released to replace the battery.

Robert

@kris, try leaving the iPod hooked to the computer for at least a couple days straight without disconnecting it. The computer has to be set where it will not go to sleep either. This sometimes jumps a logic board off that has entered a critical error mode. It has worked for me in the past.

Robert

@emily, try hooking up to the computer that says you cannot connect without the passcode then hold the power & home button down, ignore the prompt to turn off that will pop up, continue holding until you see a prompt to connect to the computer. The computer will now recognize it as an iPod in recovery mode. You will have to restore the iPod to original settings to continue, meaning you'll lose all of its content but this will get you past the passcode.

brian

Hello, I want to disconnect the battery. can I detach the ribbon connecting to the battery in order to replace it?

Powerbook Medic

@jesse - that will typically be an issue with the LCD or the LCD cable connections. Reseat the cable first, then you'll probably need to replace the LCD.

Can I upgrade my 2nd generation iPod Touch with a 3rd generation logic board?

Powerbook Medic

@kris - it is most likely the logic board at that point. Just depends if you are in the market for a newer model if its worth replacing the logic board to repair it.

kris

I have an ipod touch that is stuck on the apple logo. even after I reset it (by holding the top and home button, it comes back on and still goes stays on the apple logo. is there anything i can do or is it a lost cause. please help

Powerbook Medic

@Andy - does it sync up to your computer? You may also want to check the contacts from the battery to the logic board and make sure they are all connected well.

Andy

I recently replaced the logic board with the battery that I purchased from you. When I attach the sync cable, it will not charge the battery. Please help.

Powerbook Medic

@Diego - you generally should be able to just go in reverse. Just make sure when taking it apart you have organized your parts and screws chronologically.

Powerbook Medic

@julio - you'll most likely need to boot it into DFU mode. Google search should show you how to do it.

Diego

So where is the putting it back together video?!?! LOL Great video by the way :)

where is the antenna connection located. i mean theirs like 15 little connections on the WiFi cable and i used the M3 conductive tape the hold it down and by removing it can damage the cable. oh and the new WiFi cables didn't come with the little wire mesh pieces are they a necessity. i don't understand

Powerbook Medic

@keveners - that would be an issue with the antenna connections. I'd reseat it and check for any damage.

Hi, is it critical to get a replacement digitizer assembly with exactly the same serial number as my existing broken one (821-0627-A)? The replacement I have doesn't work and its serial number is slightly different (821-0627-06). Also, if it's not the digitizer that's faulty any idea what else it might be? Any info appreciated.

Powerbook Medic

@Lisa - you'll most likely have to take the front all the way off.

Lisa

Thank you. Would I have to open it up completely to re-align it or can I just open up the top area and snap it back closed and hope it works? I wouldn't attempt fixing it myself as far as replacing it because after watching your video it looks way too complicated for me. Thank you for responding.

Powerbook Medic

@Lisa - it may be just out of alignment and needs to be reseated, but most likely it'll require replacing it.

Lisa

Hello. I was wondering if there was any "easy fix" for an Ipod Touch 2nd gen. power button without having to replace the cable? It still works, for now, but it is VERY hard to press to get it to work. Thank you.

Can you replace a Ipod touch 2nd Gen 8GB logic board with a 16GB logic board?

Powerbook Medic

@Anthony - you'll probably need a new touch panel, but with liquid spills its hard to say without seeing the extent of the damage inside.

Antony

Powerbook Medic

@Max - with water damage you'll want to open it up and look for any corrosion damage to help diagnose the issue. It could be the digitizer or the logic board.

Max

Hi Doc, Your videos are great and already helped to fix a Mac ;) I got an Ipod 2G that got a bit wet (In a bag) The touch screen is not working reading here and there it's either the Wifi Cable either the digitize, how can I test befor to order one or the other part? Thanks

Lisa K

Thank you. That's what I figured about not having the SHSH Blob. :( I called Apple yesterday and they were NOT the least bit helpful! I didn't want to put too much more money into it, being as it's only a 2nd gen, but I guess I'll have to if there's any hope of fixing it. Thanks again for responding. It's so nice that you want to help people with their iPod problems.

Powerbook Medic

@Lisa - without the SHSH blob you are sort of stuck as far as downgrading goes. If there isn't any physical damage to it, I might would recommend taking it to an Apple Store and begging if it is out of warranty. You can replace the logic board which would probably fix it if you want to go that route.

Lisa K

Great video! I have a 2nd gen iPod Touch. Everything was working perfectly on it until it got upgraded to IOS 4.2.1. (the most recent one). Now, the iPod lost ALL sound! None from the internal or external speakers at all! Also, when I go to play a song or a video, it will not even start playing...it just goes back to the song or video menu. I think it's a software related problem, but what do you think? I've tried rebooting it, restoring it (about 20 times), but I don't have the SHSH Blob for it to downgrade it because I bought it used. :( Do you have any ideas on how to possibly fix this? It's like new and I love it.

I purchased a broken ipod with a cracked digitizer, and the touch screen was not responding. So replaced the digitizer. The new digitizer is connected properly. The touch screen still does not respond. What should i do? Or, what could the problem be? thank you.

Powerbook Medic

@sue - the video doesn't cover putting it back together, but there should be a couple of screws to reattach the cable to the buttons.

Powerbook Medic

@ryan - that would typically be a logic board issue, but I would go back in and reseat all the cables, maybe something is getting shorted out.

sue

@tracee- I'd replace the battery first. Unfortunately with these the battery is soldered, so you'll need to solder or replace the logic board with the battery already attached.

hi my ipod wont turn on unless plugged into a pc. but then it wont charge and make a weird constant beeping sound. wen i press the sleep button the beeping gets distorted but still beeps. wen the ipod goes back into sleep the beeps slowly return to "normal" chime-like beeps. help please :(

Powerbook Medic

@ruel - that will typically be a bad LCD or logic board.

ruel quimbo

Hello my iPod has no more light. but i can still see the menu. what should i do to fix this problem?

Powerbook Medic

@Louis - It is probably more major than just the screen if its not detected by your computer any more. Could be the logic board or battery. You may want to send it in to have us diagnosis it at this point.

Powerbook Medic

@Stefan - it is most likely some issue with the logic board whether it got shorted out by static charge or possibly a damaged cable is shorting it out. I'd try just plugging in the logic board by itself to the computer and see if its detected.

LOUIS

I have done these repairs a lot but never had one just not respond after replacing a screen. any suggestions?

@GMK - you probably just need to replace the headphone jack. it is a tricky repair though as it does require soldering. the other option is replacing the logic board which includes it.

GMK

My ipod touch 2nd gen has 2 problems. Right side headphone jack does not work and speaker works always inspite of my head phone jack in the jack. Do you think this problems are fixable. If so is it worth repairing or buying a new touch?

Powerbook Medic

@manolo - if it isn't detected by your computer, it can be the cable or the logic board.

Powerbook Medic

@virgil - you can try recovery mode first. turn it off then turn it back on while holding the home button. this should let you get to the point of restoring it in itunes. if it doesn't, it is probably a logic board issue and may not be cost effective to repair.

virgil

the only thing I would suggest is NOT to use any metal tools, but plastic guitar picks instead, moving along and letting the picks help keep the unit open as you go...as many do not have the hand skills to use the putty knife...and may save the screen from cracking in the process....just a thought. Thanks. V.

I have a question after watching the video. The backlight is out on the neighbors, so is that part of the screen itself then?

Powerbook Medic

It could be just a loose display cable or it could be a more severe problem that may require replacing the LCD or even the logic board. Probably best to get it professionally diagnosed at this point.

So i took my ipod touch for a swim and discovered that it doesn't work to well, or at all, after it gets wet. (long story, not to proud of it either) Can you guys repair an ipod touch after it has pulled a Michael Phelps and how much does that usually run or should I be getting a shovel and an honor guard?

Powerbook Medic

@Justina - water damage usually affects the logic board pretty quick and given your issues, the LCD or the logic board are most likely the problem areas. You can look around the logic board and see if you see any corrosion damage. We offer a free diagnosis if you want us to take a look at it. You'll only be responsible for shipping if you decide not to have it repaired.

Powerbook Medic

@Mike - i would try another usb port just to be sure it isn't something simple. I would try leaving it plugged in for at least 10 minutes. If nothing comes up on the screen, it'll be either the battery or the logic board. You may want to have it professionally diagnosed.
