@marco - check software updates. What software is on your kindle? If you're not running 3.43 you need to update

Good Morning, I replaced my logic board on my kindle 3rd gen who was originally a 3G model with a logic board for a WiFi model. I can connect to the Wifi but it doesn't open any site. it says that the kindle is unable to connect. I checked all the connectors and it's all properly connected, any suggestions on how to solve this?

Amy

Please could you suggest why this is happening?

I replaced the screen of my kindle generation 3, but now all my screensavers and pictures are faded, even though all the words are fine and legible.

My right page turn is not working properly anymore. It either doesn't respond at all, or flips 2-4 pages at once. The right side works fine, so I think it's just been worn out... what part would I need to replace to fix it?

I don't know whether it's a battery problem or a screen prob! Screen is striped, like when a printer is running low on ink. Charged it and the light was yellow for a while then turned green. Power on, green light comes on for a few seconds then goes off. Screen never responds. Tried resets, green light blinks then shuts off. Took battery out for a few minutes and put back in, no change. It had been sitting idle for several months unused. Been in a safe place so it hasn't sustained damage. What do ya think?

Thank you so much. I ordered a new screen and used your video to replace my broken one. I am not at all handy but your instructions were easy to follow and clear. My Kindle is as good as new. I'm thrilled. Thank you.

@Jonathan tran - Hi Jon, Did you ever find out what was wrong with your kindle 3? I am having similar keyboard issues with mine and would love to replace a part, if simple enough. When I hit the "right" arrow key on the keyboard (in the 4 direction square) it registers as "enter" instead.

My kindle is frozen om the Ralph Ellison screen. It gives me a yellow light as its charging, but no green light when I try to power on and no green light when I try to hard reset. I have tried the battery removal and it doesn't seem to work. Do you think this would be a motherboard issue or is it something else?

Ok I had a kindle model D00901 with 3g. It's screen broke so I got a used one to replace it from amazon. They sent me the wrong color so they gave me a full refund on it and I got to keep it. Well now I realized that they also sent me one that doesn't have 3g like the one I ordered. I really don't want to order another and go through the long transfer process again. Is there anyway I can take the 3g card from my broken kindle and put it in my new wifi one? Please let me know asap so I know if I have to order it all over again.

I replaced the mother board and now my kindle is no longer frozen. Yay! But, now the screen has tiny horizontal lines that are evenly spaced all the way down the screen. Like a printout with low ink. Do you think I need to replace the screen? (Thanks for the video - it was really helpful. BTW, there are 12 screws that hold the mother board down - the video says 11)

Powerbook Medic

@joanna - most likely

My kindle 3 is frozen. The reboot does not work. It seems as if it tries to reboot itself but then gets frozen because sometimes the screen is white, sometimes it has the tree with a status bar at varying stages. I don't think it's the battery. Does it seem like a motherboard issue?

My kindle had liquid spilled on it. I enclosed it in rice but the screen locks up after 20 minutes The search bar appears and the back button won't get rid of it. What needs to be replaced?

Do you have motherboards without 3g. If not is this motherboard compatible with mine (no 3G)

@fmarsh - it is hard to say without seeing it in shop, but it may be a bad motherboard.

Powerbook Medic

@Anna - what was the kindle doing before? It may be something else. If your old board was working better than the replacement you may want to reinstall that one and make sure it turns on. You may also want to send it to us or take it somewhere for repair so other parts can be tested.

Anna

I've just changed the 3 G motherboard to my kindle 3 with the new one that you just sent me, but the kindle wont turn on and has lines across the screen, do you now what the problem could be? The screen is new as well.

Nell Matthews

I managed to catch my Kindle touch under a fitness machine and put a crease in the upper rt edge of the case - not the screen. The screen now has a 1.3 cm band of text that doesn't change, a 7.6 x 5.8 cm blank rectangle in the lower left, and what's left works fine. I guess that the motherboard was damaged?

Mary

I replaced my screen, which had been stepped on, using this video. It fired up perfectly the first time, but the next time I went to use it, the screen was showing lines across the screen and a cracked/spider web pattern that looks like the damage on the original. I have tried resetting it, but no change. Any ideas?

Hi, I think I have the same problem as Simon did 3 months ago. Do you know if replacing the motherboard fixed the problem? I just replaced the screen and it still isn't doing anything. I tried to order the part via your site and apparently it's not available right now. Is there an ETA?

Powerbook Medic

@Paul - thanks for the info. Why Amazon uses the same model numbers for different models baffles me.

Paul

@PowerbookMedic. The model shown in the video is NOT 3G! The screw is about 3/4" to the right of the left side speaker screw. See photos here---> flickr.com/gp/100815967@N03/21UFiE/ Also there are 12 (not eleven as indicated) screws to remove holding the logic board.

Powerbook Medic

@Paul - where is the additional screw you have on yours? The model taken apart in this video is a D00901 like your own. I know of only two revisions of this model (a white and a graphite) both released at the same time, and we've never noticed a difference.

Paul

Hi, I have a kindle 3g+wifi (model d00901) which needed a screen replacement. I followed the link for that model which brought me to this video. Following the procedure in this video is incorrect for this device and further damaged my kindle. (the removal of the speaker for my device requires an additional screw to be removed, otherwise it will tear off from the printed circuit on the back of speaker) please update your videos to include proper procedures for this model, so others will not meet the same fate!!

I am glad to find your website. My kindle get frozen after minute or so. Shut down, keyboard, menu, is not working. Only 20 sec restart. I tried to restart, reset, installed updates, changed the battery. It get frozen anyway less than a minute after restart. What is your suggestion?

Powerbook Medic

@Nick - it won't need the software reinstalled. You will have to re-register the kindle again.

Nick

My kindle is in perfect state, apparently the only problem is that the motherboard is burned. I'm thinking in buying you one of those. But first I've got some questions. After replacing the motherboard,(apparently i can do it by myself) Does the kindle 3 wifi needs to reinstall some software? In the case it needs, how i can get it installed? Does it need more changes after that? Thanks a lot!!!

Powerbook Medic

@Simon - that is strange. I'm not sure what else it could be honestly. All I can suggest is sending it to us for a free diagnosis or if you have someone local that can test it out further.

Simon

OK, so I first replaced the logic board, then ordered the screen and replaced it. Still no luck. The logic board does not seem to be communicating with the screen. The screen I took out did not have any visible damage. I tried the reset again too. Nothing. What is left. I have lost hope now and yet am intrigued as to what could have gone wrong. Any other thoughts?? thanks Simon

Powerbook Medic

@Nick - at that point I would say yes.

My kindle is frozen, it will give me a yellow light as its charging, but no green light when I try to power on and no green light when I try to hard reset. I have tried the battery removal and it doesn't seem to work. I now try to connect with usb to my pc and it fails to connect. Do you think this would be a motherboard issue?

Powerbook Medic

@Simon - I would probably try the screen first.

Simon

Hi, my kindle 3 is stuck on the screen saver screen. No damage or impact or sudden temperature changes, just one day... frozen screen. I have tried the hard and soft resets multiple times; disconnected the battery, waited then reconnected. There is no obvious damage to the screen. The voice guide is working, so the Kindle turns on and off and navigates pages etc just can't see any of it. I have read the other posts here, do I need a new motherboard or screen? Thanks for your help and great tips!

Russ

I failed to mention that directly after I dropped my kindle, it was blank, and after several resets, it is now sort-of limping along. At first, it kept toggling from the Home screen to the selected book, then back again. Then I'd do another reset, and it would be on the last page read, frozen. Another reset, and it would go to the 'screen-saver' screen. Very intermittent. Please help-I can't go back to normal books! Thanks. Russ

Russ

I dropped my Kindle Keyboard. Now, the spring-loaded power switch on the bottom edge is very tight, and doesn't spring back anymore. Can be moved if you push it. Machine now does uncalled-for things, too, like go to the Home screen when you turn the page, but only intermittently. What needs replacement? Thank you. RPV

12 oz. of liquid was spelt on my wife’s Kindle D00901 we dried it off and put it in rice overnight, reset it and everything seems to work but the 5way navigation buttons it is stuck in the down position in that the buttons move, but the cursor goes to the bottom of any screen that I can access and it will not select. After watching your excellent instructional video I am confident that I can change out any defective parts, but I have no idea as to which part that would be can you offer and suggestions?

It wasn't hard at all to replace the screen. This video was a great tool! However, now I'm having all kinds of problems with the keyboard and the ink showing up on the screen. I'm not sure what is wrong. Electronics are so touchy...it's like once it's open and exposed, it's never the same. It looks like I'm going to have to breakdown and order another Kindle. Electronics nowadays are made to be disposable...it's a shame.

tammy

how hard was it to replace the screen. I have replaced screens on my macbook as wells as other laptops

Powerbook Medic

@Tamara - The keyboard contacts themselves are part of the midboard. You can see that in the part list to the right. That connects to the motherboard.

Tamara

Where does the keyboard connect? I thought it just laid in there?

Powerbook Medic

@Tamara - it definitely sounds like it is connected wrong or the connection is dirty. I'd open it back up, blow out the connection with some compressed air, and reconnect it.

Tamara

Hi, I recently bought a Kindle screen from you and replaced it. I put everything back together to discover that the keyboard is not working correctly. Powerbook Medic

@Kim - make sure you try holding the power switch in the on position for 20 seconds and make sure it doesn't reset. That usually fixes that, if not try plugging it into your computer. It's rarely a hardware issue, but in the end it could be either the battery or motherboard.

Kim

I have a kindle 3 model D00901. My daughter had it and now it does not turn on. It wont hold even stay on when I turn it on. I am not sure if it is the motherboard or should I try and replace the battery first? I tried pulling the batter out, and I plugged it into my computer and the light was yellow. Does the number D00901(B) 003WWA1004XX look like the number you're looking for? This Kindle belongs to a friend who has already replaced it with a Kindle Fire (hope she doesn't get her axx burned). I was mainly trying to get her fixed up for a spare, but any help is appreciated.

Powerbook Medic

@Phylis - it really depends what is damaged. If it is just the screen, it wouldn't be too expensive. We sell the parts to the right. If you are wanting us to repair it, I'd recommend starting a repair quote through the Send-in service link at the top of our site.

Phylis

I have a Kindle 3..my grandson kneeled on it and damaged internally. Have any guess as to what the repair costs would be? Model no. D00901. The glass is not shattered.

Powerbook Medic

@Bill - none of those look right. Kindle serials typically start with a B. If you can't get the back off, you may just want to send it to us to do.

Bill

Thanks for the quick reply. If the serial # is the CMIIT ID, it starts off with:2010 The only other numbers are the FCC ID# and a IC 8960 number. There are also numbers associated with other manufacturers like ANATEL #1055 etc.

Powerbook Medic

@Bill - amazon has started adding some crazy adhesive to the battery that sits in the very middle of the back. You can have all the clips popped out and it'll still stay strong. You need a long flat tool like a putty knife to slide in there and start loosening the adhesive. As far as your model, if you can provide the first 4 of your serial number (not the model number on the back), we can check what you have.

Powerbook Medic

@carolyn - it is most likely the motherboard at this point. you can try that or you can send the kindle to us and we can run a full diagnosis on it.

Bill

Apparently there is a different version of the Kindle 3 that's in your video. My model D00901 with frozen screen - showing 67% battery power, and the green power light does come on after about 15 seconds, however it only has two access slots on the left side of the unit, and although I can get the tool into the slots, the back shows no signs of loosening up for me. The product is put together well, just not made to last. Any ideas?

Powerbook Medic

@Ray - I would open it back up and check the contacts on the battery and logic board. Make sure they are clean and getting a good connection. Besides that, we'd really need to see it in the shop to further diagnose it.

Ray

Hi! I am back again. I used this excellent video to open the Kindle and replace the battery. Charged it up and it did OK. But now, after one night of use (say 4 hours) no light came on. I charged it overnight and the green light was on in the morning. Then without use in the afternoon the yellow light came on. All this while, the charger was plugged in. @clutch - if the 20 second reset doesn't fix it, it most likely needs a screen, yes.

This video enabled me to fix my Kindle. Without it I would never have been able to get it apart and together again. As far as assembly goes just write everything down and go in reverse. I changed a broken screen and it works fine now. Only problem I had is there are two aluminum washers that go under the battery that are not mentioned in the video. I was at a loss where they went when I removed the motherboard they fell off. I had to take my other keyboard kindle apart to find out where they went. Now I would know how to change any other components that might go out. I bought a spare batter but maybe I should have a spare motherboard too. Your magnetic screwdriver is a life saver with those tiny screws too. Thanks for all the help. I am a grateful customer.

The screen on my kindle has several lines running through it (looks like an etch-a-sketch). It is not frozen, as you can switch to different pages, but the lines continue to show up. I tried the reboot suggestion but there was no change. Do I need an entirely new screen or is the issue something else?

KristinaD

Love this site! The video was so clear and easy to follow, I feel confident enough to troubleshoot my Kindle. Wish me luck!

Powerbook Medic

@Ray - I would check the connections on the battery and most likely replace it. Your issues definitely sound like a battery issue.

Ray

Wow, this is a wonderful site! I have a kindle 3 that has some sporatic symptoms. Sometimes it takes forever to charge up. Sometimes even with a full charge, I can only read for an hour or two and it quits. Lastly, quite a number of times, it simply won't start. This has been partially been solved by charging, however, sometimes I can't get it to cahrge. Finally when all else fails, I give it a good rap like people do to pack a new pack of cigarettes. Then it may turn on or at least allow me to charge it. I am more than happy to open it up. Until I saw you video I was thinking about a loose battery wire, however that doesn't seem to exist now. I have a volt meter and can check the battery voltage but not the draw down. Any ideas on what I might do? Thanks in advance for your help!

Powerbook Medic

@Mik - that's where I'd start.

Mik

Hi, I stood on my kindle and there was slight cracking noise, although there is no outward sign of damage to the screen, aside from a few lines appearing here and there, it does not react at all. Power lights react as expected on power up and on reset but no joy with either soft reset or factory reset. I presume most likely a new screen required, but is likely to be anything else?

Philip K.

I am having freezing problems. it keeps needing a restart and i cant use it for more than a few pages. i am able to replace parts but i want to only do it once. would this be a mid broad or motherboard problem?

Dan

My Kindle froze on the start-up screen. I have tried rebooting. The reboot starts, but the progress bar freezes about 1/4 of the way. The battery is completely charged.

Powerbook Medic

@Shaun - just check the contacts for the battery, make sure there is no corrosion or burnt out chips or contacts. If we had it in shop, we'd check for damage on the motherboard and if none was found, the easiest check is to pop another known working battery in there and see if it fixes it. If not, then move on to the motherboard replacement.

Shaun

@ PM: Ok, but to check the battery I need to do what? I have no voltage meter, but I have a Batteries Plus nearby; will they check for me?..or is there another option I'm not familiar with? Thanks for the speedy response previously.

Powerbook Medic

@Shaun - sounds like it is most likely the motherboard with those two issues. You may want to check the battery just to be sure first though.

Shaun

My Kindle 3 wifi only dropped and will not turn on or hard restart. Apart from replacing the motherboard - I assume - is there a connection or trouble area I should check before I replace? Maybe I can reconnect something loose. Other than that, I can't get a green light from charging either; is that a motherboard issue too?

Jonathan tran

the kindle keyboard glitches when i try to type, the arrow keys and some selected letters throughout the board dont work either. what part should i buy? possibly the mid board with keyboard?

Powerbook Medic

@Derek - there is a restocking fee for returning an item that has no issue. If you aren't sure which is the problem, you may want to send it to us to do for a labor fee and avoid the back and forth shipping costs.

Derek

Thanks. If I buy the screen and it doesn't fix it, can I return it then order the motherboard? If I have to buy both and keep both I may as well buy a new Kindle.

Powerbook Medic

@Derek - it can be either. The screen is more likely the culprit though.

Derek

For a frozen screen (no physical dasmage to the screen, just frozen with lines on it), is that the motherboard or the screen which needs to be replaced?

Great guide. Well done Guys. Just replaced the front cover on my Kindle with one supplied by you. I could not have done the job withou it. I do have an issue with the battery meter display. It now just shows a question mark on the battery display and no usage. I did also damage the 3G antenna when removing the speakers. As I use mainly with wifi this may not present an issue. Can I suggest you add a comment on the video to remove the third antenna screw on 3G models.

My keyboard seems to be messed up. When pushing the "forward" or "back" page buttons, instead of turning the page, each button produces a group of odd characters (6h7v, qoj8b, 45,...) Also, some of the keys seems to be messed up as well. Would this be an issue with the midboard or the motherboard?

Powerbook Medic

@CDB - unfortunately no. you'll need to replace the motherboard.

Powerbook Medic

Excellent video - took a lot of the stress away from replacing a broken screen. Note - the 3G model has an additional screw holding in the antenna assembly to the speaker bar that needs to be removed at the same time, as well as a clip on antenna cable going over the bar that can be flipped up to disconnect it.

I accidentally put my knee on the back of my kindle and cracked the screen to the point of uselessness. I thought all was lost, but I brought my hopes to the internet and blindly stumbled upon this video. I found it extremely easy to understand and to follow and immediately started surgery. When I didn't notice any damage except to the screen, I ordered the part, which I also found very convenient that this site has all parts handy. A Saturday night purchase resulted in a Wednesday delivery with the most basic of shipping options. After putting the kindle back together, I am pleased to find it as new again. My only suggestion would be to have this video in the reverse to help put it all back together again.

Do you know which part failures would lead to a frozen screen. I have tried soft reset, hard reset and removing/replacing the battery to no avail. I'm trying to fix it for less than the cost of a new one.

@Philip - sorry about that. It looks like the tech misspoke.

Very nice breakdown, but there are 12, not 11 screws in the logic board and you must use a phillip's-head screwdriver, not a flat-head. Thanks.

My kindle is frozen. Could not get it to hard reset. Removed battery and put it back, still no luck. What part could be bad that needs replacement?
