Post subject: Upgraded P-book: System Profiler Shows 2 Machine Speeds

I posted this in the General Discussion area; thought this might be a better place for it:
I inherited a Powerbook 1400cs which had been upgraded to a G3 233MHz machine running OS 8.6. It still had its dinky hard drive, however, which I just replaced with an IBM 6 Gig HD with OS 9 installed. I partitioned the HD, putting OS 9 in 1 Gig and my trusty OS 8.6 and applications in 5 Gigs.
Now, when the machine is booted in OS 8.6, the Apple System Profiler shows machine speed at the usual 233MHz, but when booted in OS 9 (actually OS 9.1) the Profiler shows machine speed at a miniscule 33MHz. I have used the "Update System Profile" and "Update All Information" commands but the Profiler still shows Machine Speed as 33MHz in OS 9.1.
Is the Profiler accurate in both cases? Does OS 9.1 sap the processor speed? Or is there a problem with my OS 9 System Profiler desk accessory?
After further research I've decided to wipe OS 9.1 off the HD and stick with 8.6. It's pretty lean and quick and it does all I need it for on this 'Book.
But the 2 different machine speeds still puzzles me...
