@Andy - You may have bought a battery made for the larger capacity iPods which are slightly thicker and won't fit in the 30GB back case properly.

Andy

Replaced battery, now the top and chrome back are separating on one side. How do I fix?

My iPod 5th generation will not charge. When plugged in to the wall outlet , it attempts to turn on but says please wait very low battery.

MasonR

Thanks, I will be back at the end of the month to get the parts I see you have listed.

Powerbook Medic

@Mason R. - that typically means it is having trouble loading the operating system. your hard drive could be corrupt and needs to be restored or is defective.

I have a 5th Gen iPod 60GB // Model A1136 // S/N ...txl // EMC 2065 // with Video The problem I have is that the screen comes on and displays a red X in a red circle. www.apple.com/support/ipod <---- the only message I get. Any ideas?

@Steven - Same problem for me. There are small rubber-like spacers that "connect" the thumbwheel (and center button) to push switches on the board. On my iPod the center wheel spacer had slipped. I repositioned the spacer and all was well. Disassembling the case is tricky. Refer to the instructions posted elsewhere on this site; they are very helpful. Of particular importance are the locations of the six (?) locking tabs on the sides of the front faceplate. Knowing where these are helps to remove the faceplate without damage. Six (?) small screws need to be removed to separate the faceplate from the board. You'll need a #00 Philips head screw driver to accomplish this. If you decide to order any additional parts, such as a new battery, include a set of these screws in the order. They are tiny and easy to lose, but cheap. Lastly, try to make sure you do everything you want to do before reassembling the iPod: everytime you take it apart you risk damaging it.

Steven

I have a 5th Generation iPod (60gb A1136) and the center click wheel button stopped working. It seems to be stuck in the down position. Can I fix it by simply replacing the button or do I need to replace the logic board? Thank you in advance for your help.

My nano keeps showing that it is in lock mode without the hold button being on. I have done everything and cannot seem to reset it, including resetting it to factory defaults. Is there any hope for my nano?

Powerbook Medic

@Peter - if sound isn't working for both headphones and through a base station, it is most likely going to be the audio processing chip on the logic board. I would try to do a factory reset just to rule out a software issue, but it will most likely require replacing the logic board.

Later, Peter

30gb. iPod Video (black)... no sound from either output connection (base & headphones). It boots up fine... the entire menu comes up & can be negotiated with the click wheel... any fixes for the sound issue?

i have an ipod 5th gen a1136, it powers on fine it runs through the system reset fine as well but when i connect it to my pc itunes tells me it is currupt and that i need to restore it, so i do, it takes forever then restarts, when it does itunes does the same thing all over again telling me it is currput, what do i do?

vi

is this logic board? connected to pc: ipod (A1136, 80 gb)shows in itunes, all files intact, all files play. disconnected from pc, menu window shows, but no response from click wheel; backlight only resumes when I click lock switch on-off. no response to center/menu button reset. battery charges fine. good video, by the way!

Powerbook Medic

@Pamela - that is a weird one. I would say it is most likely a partially defective logic board issue if it works fine in the dock but won't sync to the computer. If the hard drive clicking is louder than usual, however, that's typically a sign of a failing hard drive.

Pamela

Ipod Classic shuts on and off repeatedly. Just shows apple logo. I can hear it clicking but it won't display any menu or play at all on it's own. Won't show up in itunes when I hook it up to my computer but when I hook it up to my Memorex stereo with ipod dock it plays fine. What the heck?

Powerbook Medic

@chas - most likely a bad hard drive. Sometimes you can check it in disk utility even though it is not mounting properly to see if it is reporting any errors.

chas

@Ben - the screen sometimes goes out in lines when it suddenly loses battery power, so I would just start there and replace the battery.

My sister let me take apart her eight year old iPod today. It had died two years prior to this date, but she kept it anyway for sentimental reasons. I took it apart and everything looks fine (I have dealt with corroded logic boards before, so I know what damage can look like). She described that before the device completely died, it was not holding a charge, for this reason I suspect that the battery is the problem. However, she also described that the screen was glitching at the end of its life ("blackish/grayish" bars would run down the screen, then go away). Could this be a result of a logic board problem? or do you think that the battery dying created an imbalance of electricity in the logic board, creating glitches? Thank you! (sorry for the long post)

Powerbook Medic

@Jacob - you will mainly want to make sure the battery cable is connected and isn't coming unplugged while you put the case back on. Most issues with these after disassembly are the cables not being seated properly.

Jacob

The middle button on my girlfriend's iPod Video was stuck so we disassembled it, fixed the button, and put it back together but now it won't turn on. Checked the cables, tried all the reset tricks, etc but nothing worked. Any idea what could've gone wrong?

Sully

Small update. I got it to work again by gently slamming the top left side of the iPod on a book a few times. I guess the HDD cable must've been loose.

Sully

That's a bummer. Thank you for your swift responses, though. Much appreciated.

Powerbook Medic

@Sully - yes it would unfortunately.

Sully

Would that delete the music files on it though? It's a new laptop and the music on my ipod is not backed up on any itunes, sadly.

Powerbook Medic

@Sully - it most likely corrupted the operating system. You should have an option to restore it in iTunes.

Sully

Hi. I formatted my Ipod a1136 but now when I try to add tracks from the computer it cannot show them in the Ipod or even play them. How can I add them back, and is there software I need to install on the computer to be able to do this effectively? If so, where do I get this software? thx

Powerbook Medic

@brad - may be an issue with the sound processor on the logic board. That's where I'd start if your computer is reading off the drive fine.

Powerbook Medic

@Harry - it can be either. Sometimes you can go into the secret menu by holding left and select while booting to run some tests there on the drive

brad

Shows music When play is pushed nothing happens. Plays from itunes fine. Have restored and reset.

Harry

I have a ipod 5th Gen that is in a constant loop of wanting to restore does this mean the drive is damaged or is it a logic board issue. The disk check reports no errors? advice be great thanks

Powerbook Medic

@CURT - you'll need to take it apart to the point of taking the front case off. From there, you can reseat the clickwheel and select button.

Powerbook Medic

@Sarah - when you say unlock, you mean the hold switch stopped working? The switch inside may have broken which you'd need to replace the headphone jack module.

Sarah

My ipod was working just fine earlier today. I locked it to stop playing the music and put it away for a couple hours. I turned it back on later and it was playing fine. All of the sudden, it stopped mid-song and when I tried to unlock it, it wouldn't unlock. Is it broken?

Powerbook Medic

@James - try connecting it to your computer and see if it is detected. if not, you may have damaged the logic board.

Powerbook Medic

@gpacombe - I would try another USB port and another USB cable first. If it still doesn't work, it is most likely the logic board.

My iPod 5th gen video 60GB doesn't have the same logic board connector for the earpiece ribbon cable. It is rather near to the metal frame which makes it difficult to reconnect the cable. Your video has been most helpful - can yu give me any tips withmy problem?

Powerbook Medic

@sam - is the drive making any strange noises? usually bad drives will start making a clicking noise. If you think the drive has gone bad, you are probably still under warranty and you can contact customer support and send it back for testing and replacement.

Powerbook Medic

@Jpp - a lot of the times the clips get bent when taking it off. You can bend these back with a flathead screwdriver, and that'll probably fix it for you.

Jpp4053

Excellent instructional video. I made 2 minor repairs to my 80GB 5Gen/video iPod. I thought I had pretty good DIY videos. Yours aren't that good - they're great teaching tools. Even if not watched to repair, just knowing what may be done at a (reputable) repair shop helps immensely when told you need this part and that - the lingo. Less chance of a rip-off too. Quick question please: since several repairs done on this iPod (same model as in your video), what-if any glue can be used along the top and left side to keep iPod together. No clip "action" to hold it together as in on right side-entire side intact. Not even a tiny gap between plastic & metal back part. Thank you.

iPod 1136 stuck on the language screen. I have reset it using iTunes but it still goes right back to the language screen only to remain there. I have tried a hard drive out of another 1136 that is working and this did not help. I then tried using a different button assembly and still not working.

Model A1136 None of the buttons work, can't reset Ipod when holding the Menu and Select. I did perform a factory restore. Same issue none of the buttons work. I took it apart and press the button directly, not via the wheel and still does not work. It also doesn't hold a charge. Is it the logic board ? and battery ? click wheel ? thanks

Powerbook Medic

@Magua - I haven't heard of any limitations regarding that. If the drive is formatted to FAT32 you can't have any single files over 4GB. That's the only thing I can think of is its getting stuck on a certain file.

Magua

now its stopping at 3gb, does it not accept certain formats?

Magua

ok medic one last ?....my 60gb 5th gen will only allow me to utilize about half its storage as a data drive? i wiped the music with itunes then removed itunes. tried to load a bunch on and it stopp around 30gb

@Dallas - you'll have to go to about 3:45 in the video to get to that point to reseat the clickwheel and middle button.

Dallas

"re seat"....Please explain how to do this.... Thanks

Powerbook Medic

@Dallas - you can try and reseat the button and that usually fixes it. for the other issue, it does sound like the drive. you should be fine with an 80gb.

Dallas

Oh .... one more thing....when I'm playing songs....the song will just stop and about 1 min or less it will start up again...time for a New hard drive? if so can I install a 80GB this time ?.

Powerbook Medic

@Magua - no, that is separate.

Magua

thanks for the quick reply! I'll probably just use it as a external HD...does it make a difference if the click wheel sounds work just fine?

Powerbook Medic

@Magua - if its both, it is usually going to be the audio processor on the logic board. you'll need to replace the board.

Magua

hey medic, similar problem to bunches of others, everything looks and acts fine, but no audio output...when i plug it in to my car or stereo using the bottom port same issue, no audio from top jack or bottom?

Powerbook Medic

@jls - that issue is usually a loose LCD cable, but it isn't normally an intermittent issue, so it may be a more severe issue such as the LCD itself

when i try to charge my ipod 5th gen it says on screen very low battery but wont charge its not the charger as used it to charge my mini, what might it be?

Powerbook Medic

@AJ - with all those issues the only one thing it could be is the logic board, but it may be multiple parts. You may want to get it professionally diagnosed.

Hello, is there a new headphone jack repair for the a1136 model 30 Gig?

Powerbook Medic

@Eyal - I would try something a little weaker first like windex first, but if that doesn't work goo gone should be ok, but I would make sure you put the cleaner on the towel and not directly onto the screen.

Eyal

I have this model in black. Removed an old screen protector and now have sticky goop on the screen. Is there a safe product to use on this. Can I use Goo Gone applied to a paper towel and avoid the wheel?

Powerbook Medic

@Titan - that is typically the headphone module.

I ordered a new battery. But it is thicker than the original one. Now I can not close my iPod. I cecked the number (A1136) again. It is correct. What's the mistake?

Helen

I think its the battery but could you clarify? I have a 5th Gen 30GB Ipod Video and up to now it has worked brilliantly but over the last few weeks the battery life seems to fluctuate. As soon as it's charged although it says charged, when disconnecting from mains power it never has a full battery icon. When using it, it plays fine for a good half hour then it turns itself off, sometimes saying low battery first and other times it just goes off. I then get the white apple logo for a while and it wont switch on even when resetting. If I leave it for a while and try again, it comes back on and still shows more than half full battery! Does this mean the battery is failing or could it be something else?

Powerbook Medic

@Dan - it sounds like you need a new LCD.

Powerbook Medic

@mutwakil - that is typically a corrupt or bad hard drive. I'd try to restore it in itunes and if that failes, you most likely have a dead drive.

I was listening to my ipod, and I slid the lock over so I didn't accidentally turn up the volume or anything when I was walking, now when I try to unlock the ipod (slide the hold button to off), it doesn't "wake up", it doesn't allow me to change the song or mess with the volume and the lock icon still appears on the screen. I've tried hooking it up to my computer just to charge (not sync it with itunes) and it still won't let me do anything. PLEASE HELP!

Powerbook Medic

@christie - i'm not sure what the charging clip is. The battery connection on the logic board has a locking clip that secures the battery cable to the board. If that is missing, it only comes with a logic board.

Powerbook Medic

@Juan - yes, i'd replace the battery.

Steve

Lizette, this has recently happened to mine as well. After research I found that this is a common ipod 5th gen A1136 problem. If you press down hard on the bottom right hand side near the wheel, the music should come on but will go off again when you let go. It is the solder holding on one of the microchips to the circuit board. As a last resort, I held my wife's hair dryer over the circuit board to see if I could melt the solder to make the connection better but now the music doesn't come on at all. Looks like it may have to go in the bin.

Powerbook Medic

@Lizette - that is most likely a bad headphone module.

Lizette

Was watching a video when ipod died (a1136). normally when this happen is i can just connect to charger, but now nothing is happening. nothing on screen, no response to button mashing. have had problems with battery life and random locking up on songs. am i screwed here or can this be fixed?

Powerbook Medic

@james - it should at least get a dead battery icon on the screen when plugged up. If it doesn't and it doesn't sync up to your computer, you most likely have a dead logic board.

james

Powerbook Medic

@Andrew - the actual button presses not the spinning motion is actual contacts on the logic board. If you take it apart there should be a round contact you can actually press and hear the click sound. If the contact is missing or defective, you'll need a new logic board.

@Rav - probably a bad hard drive then. still a slight chance it could be a data issue with the logic board, but only way to really test that is with another hard drive or finding a usb enclosure for the 1.8 inch ipod drive.

Rav

Thx, I got it into Disk mode and can it can be seen in windows, but I can't format it... says it unable to format it???

Powerbook Medic

@brokenheadphonejack - no, the sound processor is part of the logic board.

brokenheadphonejack

so i would have to replace the headphone jack if it is the sound processor?

Powerbook Medic

@Rav - if it can't be restored in itunes, one thing I've tried is going into disk mode by holding down and select while booting. Then you can check in Disk Utility or Windows equivalent to check on the hard drive and see if it is going bad and try to format it if it'll let you.

Powerbook Medic

@brokeheadphonejack - really the only other thing is the sound processor built into the logic board. That'd be the next thing to replace.

@Lee - you most likely have a bad battery.

Lee

i plug my iPod fifth gen A1136 in & it says please wait very low battery but it will never charge

Powerbook Medic

@Sherpa - that is typically a hard drive problem or an issue with incompatible or corrupt music on the ipod. You may want to try and delete all the songs off the ipod and just add a couple from itunes and see if it works.

Sherpa

I have a iPod fifth gen A1136, it will turn on and let you do everything. But when I try to play music it has the play symbol in the corner, but no music will sound and the timer doesn't move for the song. Anyone have any ideas?

Powerbook Medic

@Rugger - it is either a loose display cable inside or a bad LCD. You may just want to pop it open and reseat the cable going from the LCD to the logic board. Careful though, its tiny and fragile.

Rugger91

My Ipod video still plays fine. However, the screen is just white, sometimes with lines across it. Would this be an LCD issue or possible something else. It will occasionally work, but not very often. Great instructional videos.

@brahma - click the dropdown box just above this section to download videos.

Powerbook Medic

@ranjith - you can hold down the menu and select button at the same time to do a reset. If that doesn't work, it may require syncing up with iTunes and factory resetting it.

@Woody - the actual click buttons of the clickwheel are physical buttons on the logic board. The clickwheel could be out of alignment and not clicking properly or the button itself on the logic board could be going bad. You can open it up and try pressing the button directly and see if it is a problem.

Woody

The select button on my 5th gen ipod is stuck. It still works but with just a little bit more pressure. I would like the button the be flush again like when I bought it, do I need to take the whole ipod apart to do that?

Powerbook Medic

@Robin - that's most likely the hard drive. When those go bad they usually spin up then down like that.

Robin

How can I tell if the problem is with my hard drive or logic board? My Ipod won't shut off but it doesn't work either. It sounds like it is cycling like a car engine reving up. My computer won't even recognize it. The only way to shut it up is to let the battery run down.

Powerbook Medic

@Kulbir - Yes its quite easy. Once you have the back case separated and the battery removed, there are just a few small screws and some adhesive holding the headphone jack in. Just be careful not to rip the cable when removing it as it is glued a bit.

Kulbir Suri

You do not show how to change headphone jack. Is it possible to do it at home?

Powerbook Medic

@brokepod - there are several clips along both sides that you have to get to release. You just need to get a very thin tool in between the case to release the clips but the trick is without bending or scratching the case.

brokepod

i cant even split the cases apart!

@marv - you can try running disk utility while in disk mode and scan the drive for errors. This should tell you if its a hard drive or logic board problem.

marv

when its in disk mode, but even then it shows up as a storage device. itunes doesnt pick it up. i've tried almost all the troubleshooting advice on the apple site.

Powerbook Medic

@marv - does it sync up to the computer? If so, you may want to try a restore. After that, about all it could be is a defective logic board.

marv

i also tried resetting it....but i still get the apple then the message "www.apple.com/support/ipod".

marv

so i went back and checked all connections to make sure everything was in all the way..but i still get the same message, i also tried a new battery. im stuck!?!?

Powerbook Medic

@marv - it'll do that if the battery is disconnected or not connected correctly. I would go back in and reseat the battery cable and make sure its secure and all the way into the connection. You really shouldn't see much of the metal contacts if it is in all the way.

marv

I replaced the logic board and know its working but i keep getting these messages "please wait battery very low" (its been on the charger for 3hrs) and it also looks like it trying to reboot itself every couple of minutes. I get the apple n then a message saying "www.apple.com/support/ipod"

@Tom - we don't have reassembly videos, but its pretty straightforward. Only tricky part I guess is making sure the clickwheel is flush when putting it back together.

Tom

The dissasembly was exactly how you showed and was just as easy as it looked. What I am wondering is, is the re-assembly just as easy? Do you have a vid for that? Just wondering about getting the cables re-attached.

Powerbook Medic

@marv - that'll typically be the logic board if nothing at all comes on the screen if you plug it in for 5+ minutes.

marv

Ipod is completely dead. I have it pluged in and still dont get any reponse from the ipod

Texline

Very nicely done! Good music selection that wasn't over powering your presentation which was very clear.

Powerbook Medic

@Louro - the 4 directional buttons and select button are actually pushing buttons physically on the logic board. The clockwise and counterclockwise motion is the clickwheel. Besides that, you can't really tell without opening it up.

Louro

Is anyway that I can narrow down to one or the other? I restored it to factory setting but still won't let me get pass the language screen.

Powerbook Medic

@Louro - if you can't select a language and move past that you may have a clickwheel or logic board issue.

Louro

My 1136 shows the language screen and dosen't want to do nothing else. What can that be?

Powerbook Medic

If you are talking about the sync cable, any should work. There is no dock cable inside a 5th gen. The dock connector is built directly onto the logic board.

Lima, Aender

Please people, help me, What is a right model of dock connector cable to A1136? Because i brought two wrong cables, it´s amazing...... Thankssss.

I too found it difficult to open my 5th gen iPod, such that I broke the headphone jack cable when it suddenly broke loose. I was being extremely carefully to avoid any damage but to no avail.

Powerbook Medic

@Ramiro - Before jumping to a hardware problem, I'd make sure you try hooking it up to your pc and trying to restore it with iTunes. After that.. it may be a hard drive issue.

Ramiro

Hi My 5th gen Ipod suddenly froze and got extremely hot now it does not power up only the apple logo comes on and does nothing can u help here!

Powerbook Medic

@faith - Usually its dead by that point, so heating it up rarely helps. We sell the boards on our site to the right.

Powerbook Medic

@ruger - it can be tricky. You just have to do it pretty close to where we are popping the clips. You can't really do it anywhere.

And, commonly how much cost to replace logic board? in my case, when I was realized, i took hair dryer and dried it, it was correct action to prevent further damage?

You make it look so easy!! Its not being that easy for me I try to do like that but it seens to be stuck. I don't see the tabs too. I try prying and it just bend the case. The hard try is shot and I wanted to replace it.

Powerbook Medic

@fatih - generally water damage is going to kill the logic board first, so you'll probably need to replace that.
