I recently replaced the upper case on an aluminum PB 17 1.67, as the track pad was freezing.

When I installed the keyboard the first time, I apparently missed one getting of the little tabs along the function keys through the slots in the upper case. This would cause the computer to restart when I hit the function keys near that tab.

I took it apart again last night, reinstalled the keyboard in the upper case, added a little electrical tape over the function key tabs, and put it all back together.

It worked fine, for about 10 minutes, and then the keyboard and trackpad would both freeze. Can't move the mouse pointer, can't use commands, but animations running on screen continue to move. The power key brings up the sleep/restart/shut down dialog, but I can't trigger any of the on-screen buttons.

I held the power key down to force shut down, and rebooted. This time, I just let it sit, and occasionally moved the pointer with the track pad, thinking that I was maybe pushing something on the keyboard into something else. Same thing, about 10 minutes after it booted, the keyboard and track pad froze up.

Popped the RAM out, removed and reinserted the keyboard ribbon cable into it's socket. Same thing.

I'm stumped as to why it works for a little bit and then freezes. Any ideas?

TIA,
Dan

I have the same problem, except that I have not changed the computer at all! Never opened it up, but it is still displaying all the symptoms you describe.

Ideas anyone?

Just to rule out a software problem, I would try to create a new user account and login to that and see if the same thing occurs, if it does, it is most likely going to be a hardware problem and for what you describe, it would most likely be a top case issue if it affects both the keyboard and trackpad.
