(Update: Flexing of the iBook precipitates the problem.)

Using the power adapter or on the power of a (new) battery, the 14" iBook freezes. Then sometimes follows a rapid vertical desktop scroll in which the open windows multiply and are seeminly superimposed on each other.

Next the screen becomes static with a random pattern of vertical and horizontal lines like a close up view of a fabric weave. Pressing keys will sometimes stop the scrolling and so will adjusting the tilt of the screen.

A broken screen was replaced on this computer at PowerbookMedic on November 16, 2006 and the freeze has been an ongoing problem. This is one of two iBooks that my daughter and her husband had damaged, and I am unsure if the freeze/pattern problem was already existent.

It sounds like you've got a common logic board failure. If the unit actually freezes there is no doubt it is the logic board. An LCD would not cause the machine to freeze.

Sounds like bad news. The machine definitely freezes. I now also realize that the freezing and screen patterns can be precipitated by flexing the body of the iBook.

It's is a 1GHz Power PC. Looking at your parts, it appears that I would need SKU 2140 Item #16971. Right?

That would be the one you need.
