Any ideas. I am going to move old internal to external drive to try to salvage dat on drive. Machine will not see that drive either

Are you trying to boot from an Original OS cd or your original restore cds? Also, are you holding the "c" key or "option" key at boot to make sure it boots from your optical drive?

Thank You for your reply

nephews G4, sent me laptop with no disks. Sent Mac OSX 10.2 Jaguar to me last week. No restore disks of any kind. Install 1 and 2 ver 10.2, Dev. tool disk and a disk that says Techtool on it. I tried to do both "c" key and "option" key to get it to read 10.2, to no avail. I dropped in a new HD yesterday and it will not recognize a disk in drive. It spins up for 45 seconds, down and then up again. Screen changes in "folder" icon from ? mark to Mac face.
Do I not have a disk that has a ststem folder on it ?

do I need to get a new operating system. Ie 10.4 tiger ????

You most likely need to purchase a new OS such as 10.4 Tiger. It sounds like your unit is not recognizing your CD, and that your drive is not properly formatted.

Before I run out and buy a new operating system, I put the old HD back in. This is what it does. It will show apple logo and the spinning thing will occur. It then goes to black screen with white cursor in top left. I did CMD S

I have at end of Screen
BSD root: disk0s3, major 14 minor 2
jnl: journal staret/end pointers reset! (jnl 0x1f01e60; s 0x439c00 e 0x439c00)
Singleuser boot -- fsck not done
Root device is mounted read only
If you want to make mods to files:
/sbin/fsck -fy
/sbin/mount -uw /
If you wish to boot the system, but stay in SU mode:
sh /etc/rc
disk0s3: I/O error.
disk0s3: I/O error.
This repeats itself every 25-30 seconds and will fill up the screen

Does this point to another issue ??

jaguar should boot off of the CD by holding either C or option. The option key should pop up a list of the bootable devices that the powerbook finds.

if that isn't work and it won't boot off of cd and hard drive you most likely have a logic board problem which is going to be a pretty pricey repair.

Is it worth spending $140.00 for 10.4 Tiger or is it a good chance I would be wasting money based on the fact that it will not recongnize a 10.2 disk in CD drive.

Thanks

It's a tough call. The best option would be to borrow a cd from someone else to see if it would boot, and then purchase your own copy. Otherwise, you could always buy it and then if it doesn't work sell it on eBay.
