I have a 333 Lombard that won't boot at all - no chime.
Here's what happens:
- press power button - nothing happens
- press hard reset - green LED lights up solid and stays on, press again the LED flashes twice and goes out
- battery is fully charged
Any ideas?
Any suggestions about how to start trouble-shooting the processor, PMU,
and logic board?
If it is the CPU will a G4 upgrade take care of the problem? If so do you know of a good CPU upgrade?
Read on if you want more detail of the problem.
History of the problem:
It froze up running OS 9.2 I was able to restart
it, but it froze in the boot up after the wallpaper was loaded.
After not working for a week I got it to boot after removing the battery, power, and PRAM battery, then reconnecting. It booted up in OS 9 with a screen flicker. I loaded OS 10.3 from CD which loaded perfectly and took care of the screen flicker. After running all the updates and running for a couple of hours it had a couple of kernal panics then the multi lingual - you must restart. . .. I booted from TechTools 3 CD and ran all hardware tests (except HD test b/c it was a different HD). All tests passed . When I went to test the HD it froze during the Surface Check. I rebooted and tried again. Second time it froze and won't boot - no chime.
Things I've tried with no success:
I've tried starting with non-Apple RAM removed and all RAM
removed.
I've tried various combinations of pulling the power, battery, and PRAM
battery, reconnecting all and trying to restart. No success.
I've also tried every combination of hard reset and power button (pressing
both, one then the other, holding for 60 sec., pressing w/ power and w/o
power, etc.)
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Mike,
I would suggest you try removing the processor card and replacing it. Also swap out the HD. Something I did notice in your report history was that you installed 10.3 then tested with TTP 3. that version of Tech Tool is not compatible with OS X. It would not surprise me if this is where one of your problems is occurring. You also asked about processor upgrade cards. I tried the PowerLogix card and for me it was a complete waste of time. Therre is another card out on the market, can't remember the maker, which requires you to send your PB to them for installation. Hope this helps.

Ted,
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm trying to get my hands on a different processor (ebay). I did try a different HD and put the original in a USB external case and it was fine, so I don't thing it is a HD problem.
I'll also try TTP 4 if I can get it to boot again.
Thanks again,
Mike

Ted,
Thanks for you help.
It was a bad processor. I bid on a 333Mhz G3 on ebay. When it arrived it turns out it was actually a 400Mhz. Nice surprise. When plugged in the new CPU the problem was solved. OS 10.3.5 is loaded and everything seems to be working great. I think I'll hold off on a G4 upgrade for awhile. The 400 G3 is fast enough for now.
