 Post subject: cache memory problem on my lombard

hello there,
I have got this lombard, that I upgraded when I bought it(384 ram,and 20Gb harddrive). I am running system 9.2. I have got this problem, my computer is rarely booting up, leaving me with a black screen, no fan whatsoever, and the only way for me to start up my system is to press the reset button at the back of the computer and then this is working fine...
Last one thing each time I manage to boot up then I have this message coming on my screen:
built in memory test has detected a problem with cache memory
Anyone can help me, or advise me

Your L2 cache has/is going bad. The only solution is to replace the processor. If you wait, to long it will cause the entire processor to fail and possibly cascade into other parts of the hardware system.

Maybe you've got a wrong RAM. Lombard needs PC100, perhaps you have the newer PC 133.

Open Apple System Profiler.

If it reads L2 Cache 0k, you have bad cache. (should be 512k or 1M)

This make not sense what so ever, I was told that my L2 Cache was going out and that is the reason I can't install OS 10. I get about half way thru the installation and my lambard locks up and I have to restart.

I thought well then I would buy some software to test this problem, so I bought ttp 4 and I get the lombard to startup in it but when i run the memory test it locks up or restartes on it own.

I have 256mb in the lower slot and 128 in the upper slot. I have replace the 256mb module once already. Manufacture said they sold some bad chips the first time arould. Still that didn't fix my problem.

I was talking to another mac guru the other day and he states that when he installs OS 10 on the lombard he only has one 64mb module in the lower slot and after installation he re-installs the old ram and claims this works well for him. I have not tested this technique yet.

I am in the process of considering replaceing the processor on my lombard, but reading some of what you guys are saying in the forum I don't know if that will correct my problem. When I open system profiler I show 1mb L2 cache. Now one more thing when you order ram for this powerbook most seller can't or won't verify that it is PC100, I don't know if there is a program that you can run to verify this info on your own or not. Am about to run TTP3 and see if it will tell me any info on the ram other then the size.

If any one else has any ideas please let me know.

I had the same problem, bought a new (used) processor board on ebay for $61, installed it in less than 10 minutes, and everything is running just like new!

I've been living with it for ages now...this Lombard is a bit slower than it used to be, so I reverted to OS9.2.2 to waste less time waiting for the old dear. Just occassionly I have to push the reset button and re-set the clock!

I've got the same cache problem, lombard running 9.2.2. freezes frequently, won't restart. Just did a system profile and it says "external L2 cache: not installed." But it came with "512k backside L2 cache". Nothing has been removed. Is my processor shot?

I'm going to try zapping the pram now.

The cache problem on these Lombard processors is a very common problem. If you have frequent freezes or your unit gives you a cache memory error at startup, then you need to replace your processor. Sometimes your unit will run fine for a while without the L2 cache functioning, but it will be slower with frequent crashes...and eventually your unit won't boot up. The only way to fix this issue is to replace the card. You can purchase several different cards from the link below:
