I recently acquired a powerbook 5300c that seems to have a dead backlight. (It displays, but its really really really dark.)

I would like to replace it myself, but have never opened a laptop before. Is there any advice you could give before I go hunting for the proper torx screwdriver and replacement ccfl? Do LCD's store voltage like CRTs that might blow me into next tuesday? Should i ward off the evil eye first with a hex-mark, etc? or can i just open it up, remove the lamp, order a replacement model and have a Dr Pepper?

Any advice is greatly appreciated

We don't do the repair, but your best bet is to replace the entire display, not just the backlight. Believe it or not, it'll be cheaper. You can pick up a display on eBay for cheap.
