This involves a Powerbook 1400c, purchased circa 1997. Until now it has functioned well (except that the battery no longer supports operating on location w/o being plugged into the wall).

My real problem began a week ago. It starts up and works for a while, but then it will freeze. I can turn it off using the switch in the back, but booting up again becomes difficult until finally I just have to leave it off and alone for a while.

I twice use Disk Tools to verify and fix some things, but the issue remains.

Not sure what might be causing this, though I have heard some power adaptors for this model have defects that become evident over time. Your thoughts?

It could be the power adapter, but it sounds like system software to me. Try re-installing the OS and see if that fixes the problem. If not, buy a power adapter off eBay. (I have your PowerBook model among my others, and a PowerBook Duo 230 power adapter works on it. It is cheaper and if it is the adapter that is the problem, this one will not break down like the one you have now.)
