Greetings. I have had a Sonnet Crescendo/WS G4 500 MHz card with 512 MB RAM in my Wallstreet for 2 1/2 years now with few problems other than the occasional freeze up. I'm using OS 9.2. I recently had the Crescendo card replaced on warrenty and the new card now runs incredibly hot and I am having lots of freezes and error messages such as programs (Netscape) crashing with "Unmapped Memory Exception"; "Read-only Memory Exception"; & "Bus error, invalid memory reference".
I'm using the same two generic 256 MB RAM modules on the new Crescendo card as before. Are these errors the result of software memory configurations? Hardware incompatibilities between the "new" Crescendo card (which seems to run faster than my previous Crescendo card) and my generic 256 MB RAM modules? A heat issue?
Thanks,
Charlie White

I'd contact Sonnet about the issue, and they should be able to get you a new replacement, as those symptoms are not normal.

Thank you, Bradley.
Since my original post, things have improved somewhat - fewer errors and crashes. Maximizing the Virtual Memory to "990M" seems to have helped considerably in decreasing the crashes by say 80%. Still getting the "memory-related" error messsages during the program and/or CPU crashes which is something new since putting in the new G4 upgrade card. With the old card, I use to just get freezes without any error messages, etc.
I guess I should be happy that my Wallstreet is now telling me that the problem involves the memory-upgrade card interaction, however not being able to figure out what each error message means and possible remedies is almost as frustrating as not getting any error messages.
Another change that I made that seems to be helping . . . at the time of my initial post, I had two "low profile" 256 MB memory cards on the Crescendo G4 card and this seemed to generate more heat (and crashes) than using a single low profile card with a standard profile "upper slot" card. Could it be that "low profile" 256 MB cards generate more heat than standard profile cards? If you have any thoughts on this, that will be helpful.
Finally, regarding one of the error messages "Bus Error: Invalid Memory Reference" an error website out of MIT said that a solution to this was to reset the "Date & Time" to the correct settings. When I pulled this up, I recceived a notice that I did not have the extension loaded to have Day-Light Savings automatically adjusted and/or have the clock synchronized with a network (not that this computer is connected to a network other than through broadband). Anyway, could missing that extension be the cause of at least that one error message? How do I load a single extension into the system folder without having to do a clean install of my extensions folder?
Thanks,
Charlie White
