G4 TI PB battery giving HD problems?

My G4 Ti PB 500 has recently been giving Major Volume problems...
no thread record, file has invalid id, BaseSustem.p invalid id, no parent dir
then Norton 8 says that an error 23005 unable to continue scanning and quits.

Two volumes on disk an os9 vol. which won't boot and a 23G osX vol that i used norton wipe info on... then clean installed os X.1.3 which erased the vol again now i can't boot from a CD, I can't chose vol w/ OPT key,

I do have a bad battery.

would there be other hw problems?

if I unplug the hard drive, it boots maybe...

I even used my moms G4 Ti Pb 500 and switched the drives out.

my system let my moms HD boot once then gave the same errors in norton.
now even though I clean installed os 9, 9 won't boot on my moms system any more.
I had to insatll X. which is what I'm writing this with.
