ibook g3 wont start up

I just replace the hard drive (I bought from Powerbookmedic), but all the machine does when I turn it on is I hear the fan run for about two seconds and shut off. Nothing comes up on the screen. Any ideas? Could I have done something wrong in putting it back together? Thanks

Was everything working prior to you changing out the hard drive? Even without a hard drive installed the screen will come on and give a flashing folder to indicate you either don't have a drive installed or you don't have an OS.

If all was working prior to going into the unit, you need to go back in and check all the connections. You could even try hooking it up to an external monitor. If there is no picture, you likely have a logic board issue. If there is a picture then your display cable or inverter cable are likely not properly connected.

Thanks for the reply. I had taken it to a computer shop who told me it was the hard drive. It would not come on and made the clicking sound first, then a lot of racket.
I charged the battery up last night after getting it back together. When I came home tonight I discovered the case was hot?? What does this mean? Thanks for your help.

Since my reply, I reset the power and now have a blank gray screen. I tried starting it with the Mac OS X INstall disc (holding the C) but still blank, gray screen.

It sounds like you've got a logic board failure. If your hard drive was clunking as well, it is likely you have a dual part failure. Try unplugging the hard drive and booting up. If you get the folder on the screen your board might be ok. If you still just get a gray screen, your board is probably shot.
