My iMac 24" (early 2008) has developed a problem. Black screen!!

It powers up and makes all the usual start up sounds. As it was active when this occurred, it makes the sound when email is received etc.

If I look very, very, very close to the screen I can just make out the open windows etc.

I have attached an external monitor and it displays the screen saver. All 4 small LEDs light up and turn off appropriately as it goes in to sleep mode etc.

My question: Is it a safe bet that it is the LCD panel that needs to be replaced.

TIA
Ritch

That is typically the inverter which is what controls power to the backlight. The LCD can also be the culprit.

Thanks Justin.

A further update.

It flickered and came back to life. I took the opportunity to erase the hard drive and install the original OS etc.

During that exercise it behaved. Powering up and down as it went through the installation process. I shut down and went to bed. This morning it is black screen again. Ho hum.

I had a look on your site for suitable inverter board. No Joy. It would appear that this model has the board built into the LCD Panel. I'll need to have a look at my penny jar.

iMac 24 (early 2008)

Thanks and regards,

An update for information.

I borrowed a friend's LCD panel and it didn't fix the problem. It still exhibits the exact same symptoms.

I fear that it is a lost cause. :(

I have now bought a 27" iMac to allow me to put the hassle behind me.
