 Post subject: lombard dvd playback in panther?

I have a lombard powerbook and I used to run os 8.6, then os 9. Two years ago I bought OSX and installed it and loved it but was so disappointed to find out that I lost dvd playback.
My computer died shortly thereafter after a logic board meltdown. Recenlty I've begun trying to resurrect it and I heard a rumor that dvd playback was restored in panther. Can anyone verify this or help me?
I called Apple and the tech said he THOUGHT it had dvd playback for the lombard, but he wasn't certain.

Any help will be appreciated greatly.

Panther does not restore playback to the Lombard.
You might get it to work if you maximise RAM to 512MB and get a free app called VLC from http://www.videolan.org

The only fix I'm aware of is to install a G4 chip.

And I'm not even sure about that.

I should mention that Lombards and Pamther have RAM issues. Not always, but frequently.
