I've had several imacs and macbook pros apart in my day. Gave my parents my older 13" White Macbook a couple years ago.
Mom calls to say when they open the screen sometimes the screen stays black. They have to often find the "sweet spot" to where it comes on. Usually the further the open it the more likely it is to be black.
I'm guessing this may be a bad cable and/or connector.
What is the failure trend for intermittent screen concerns?

If they look real close or shine a flashlight into the back can they still see an image? If so, it is probably a pinched inverter cable in the hinge. It may just need to be rerouted or may be damaged to the point of needing to be replaced.
No real way to tell without opening it up and looking at it.
