I was wondering as to whether its possible to install or upgrade the hard drive on a 3th gen macbook. I asked someone from the apple chat on their website, they said that they cant do that unless it needs repair.

Yes you can, and it is fairly easy to install yourself. Just take out the battery, loosen the 3 screws on the L bracket and pull out the hard drive.
