Hi,

I have an issue with my dearest mac :)

Its Mid 2009 white macbook, 2,13Ghz intel core duo, 2 Gb RAM, Nvidia 9400M GPU.

It was working like a charm for 3 yrs and few days ago it started to overheat (GPU),
When i press him up (with a game or HD youtube) temperature of CPUs rise to 85-87 Celsius and GPU to 95 Celsius, thing is that GPU is setted to underclock when it hits 95 degrees so it hits FPS in game (to unplayable). Game was working fine on it for years. But its not only a game problem its now affecting every harder pressure on CPU or GPU on youtube for instance fan still can keep it under protection zone of GPU 95 degrees, but any heavier load than that couse GPU to underclock.
I run bootcamped XP proffesionall but problem with overheat is on both OSs just in OSx it needs more time to get to dangerus point.
All temp sensors are working fine (i can see their readings normaly)
One thing that looks suspicous is that i see fan hit over 3,5k RPM when CPU is over 70 celsius. But thing is that it cant cool it off even when its on 6200.

There is no obvius problems with GPU (except that overheat).

Idle (with safari on ) temperatures:

CPU core 1: 49C
CPU core 2: 45C
CPU A proxlimity: 46C
CPU A Temp diod:50C
Northbridge chip: 57C
Northbridge position 1:48C

All temps seams regular untill i start heavier work.
Hardware test says everthing is OK.

Things i have done so far:

- Cleaned dust from board, fan and under the board
- Changed thermal compound (MX2) (3 times :) )
- Reinstalled XP and OSx (fresh install both)
- Updated all drivers on bot OSs
- Reseted all rams and SMC

Acording to programs fan spins on 6200RPM like it suppose to run.

Any help or idea is welcomed since im kinda out of clue what could be problem.

Thnx in advance.

You've tried most everything we'd do for an overheating issue. The next thing we'd do in the shop is just try a new fan just to see. Besides that, all you can really do is run some fan control software to get the fan going faster earlier.

Ok thanks for answer, new fan was my next idea :) im not sure how programs count fans RPM so i was thinking is it possible that program show 6200RPM but that real rotation is slower?

I will change fan and post results.
Thnx for reply again.

I have take mac apart (for 199th time) :) to see exact type of fan. I have one more question.
Aluminium bottom of keyboard is "burned in" it has black stain on part above heatsink, it even folow heatsinks shape.
So it maked me wonder, whats the role of keyboard bottom in cooling process. Should it take part of heat on itself?

Should keyboard bottom be apart from heatsink or it should touch it?

To me it seams that it touch it thats why it has burn-in. Is it possible that keyboard has deformed over time and it stops air flow over heatsink (in case that it should be space btw them).

Yeah, it shouldn't be touching it, so that may be the issue. I've never seen it do that in the shop though, so I'm not sure how common that problem is.

I'm waiting for fan to come first then i will chk inside. I have one more trouble i dont understand. When i watch HWMONITOR i have a line named "Positions" i have no idea what those "positions" are and i belive there is smth wrong there. X and Y position is ok always arround 0, but when MB is on desk Z coordinate shows -263. Does that means that smth is dislocated?

What "Positions" show?

you may want to take it somewhere or send it to us. we offer a free diagnosis and if you don't want it repaired, you'll only be responsible for the shipping costs.
