I have a shiny new 13" MacBook Pro. Can I safely use power cords from my old 13" MacBook? Or the extra one my partner bought for 17in MacBook Pro? What's the difference in power cords anyway?

The wattage changes sometimes. The 13" models usually use a lower wattage adapter. These can still work on the larger models, but sometimes it may not be able to turn on without a battery with enough charge or it can recharge the battery slower. In extreme cases, the display may not have enough juice to turn on or show a backlight.
