Macbook pro screen dim... Display vs Inverter?

Without warning, the screen went completely dim on my macbook pro (2.16 Intel core 2 duo). I can barely make out what's on the screen. This macbook was only 1.5 years old at the most... Do I need to replace the LCD? Or could it just be the inverter?

If this happened after installing an update you might be running into the same problem that I seem to be having (some type of firmware conflict between the airport and graphics subsystem). My fix is to boot from OSX install disk, wait for the system to come up to the installer, then select shutdown from the installer menu.

If you can't see your screen in the OSX installer you are not experiencing the same issue that I am.

For the record I am on a 2.16 Core Duo (not a core 2). Shows up as a 1,2 model with boot ROM MBP12.0061.B03in the system profiler.

it is usually the inverter, but the LCD is still a slight possibility if the bulb went out.
