I have been searching forum after forum for a definitive answer on the subject of swapping out the optical drive in my MBP. The MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 drive has decided to stop recognising discs and spits them out after about 30 seconds (a common problem which I've read so many postings about, but no solutions!)

I need to know if I can swop it out myself and where to find a replacement. Every search I've done can't find anything for my 17 inch MBP. Please point me in the direction of a solution.
If I can't replace it, or if its expensive, which external writer should i buy?
