The keyboard and the track pad don't work. The green light on the caps lock and num lock keys still illuminate. When a keyboard and mouse are plugged into a usb port, they work fine. Is there a way to diagnose whether the problem is the keyboard itself or if it is the part the keyboard plugs into? Same with the track pad. Is there a way to diagnose whether the problem is the track pad or the part it plugs into?

The keyboard and trackpad are separate connections. The keyboard connects directly to the logic board as does the top case. If you are having a problem with both, it is going to be either both parts are damaged or the logic board itself is damaged.

Other than trial and error ($$$), is there a way to diagnose which part(s) is(are) the culprit?

Not really. You can take a look at the board, see if you see any damaged areas on the logic board around those two connections.
The keyboard is extremely easy to replace, so if you decide to start the trial and error method, that would be where I start. Another option is sending it in and we can diagnose it for $50 or repair it for $95 + part cost.
