Unless my daughter's iBook is plugged in, it suddenly shuts down, and will only restart via the power button once it is plugged in. The battery can have a decent charge, too. It just happened at 87%.

Have you tried another battery? A battery can show a charge and still not work.

Bradley,
This looks like a probable cure. This is the original battery and it was stored in the computer when not in use for some time.
I have just received a new battery from you, but have been hesitant to open it up and use it because of this shut down issue of which I had not been aware. I am concerned about putting the money for a new battery into this computer when there might be another perhaps costly issue to deal with.
Can I return the battery if it doesn't take care of the problem? If it does do the trick, I'll likely upgrade the hard drive. But the computer needs to be functioning well first.

All parts come with a 1 year warranty, 60 day money back. If it doesn't fix the issue, let us know and we can set you up with a return.

A new battery did the job!
The iBook has the charged up new battery installed and is working fine. After hours of use there has been no recurrence of the shut down
Thanks, Bradley.
