The hard drive on my 17" Aluminum G4 Powerbook died recently. I purchased a new HD (Seagate 160Mb, 5,400rpm) and installed it. I was able to format the drive with Disk Utility from the original OS X CD (10.4) but, every time I try to run the installer, I get a message saying that installation cannot be done on my computer. I don't even get to the screen where I can choose which disk to install on.

Most likely you are using either an upgrade disk or a restore disk from a different machine. Upgrade disks require an OS to already be installed and can't be installed on a new blank drive. Restore disks come with the machine from Apple and will only work on that specific family of machine.
