Last night I put the PB to sleep with the power adapter still plugged in as usual. When I woke it up today the screen stayed black. The center of the keyboard and above the keyboard seemed warmer than usual. Pressing the power key for a few seconds managed to elicit a sound as if the hard drive was winding down and off. Pressing the power key a second time elicited a whir as if the hard drive was powering up but no chime (checked sound and brightness keys and they were all the way up) and after a few seconds no sound from the drive. After that it will sometimes power off by pressing the key, sometimes not and same erratic behavior for powering it on. The power adapter light is green and the battery appears ok. Removed the battery and adapter and pressed the power key for five seconds. After reinserting battery and cable, still no joy.

I tried putting the original system disk into the optical drive but it won't go in all the way. I tried booting from an external firewire drive (using the Command-Option-Shift-Delete key combo) with system 10.5.6 and that also didn't work. I assumed if the HD died, these options should have worked.

Is this a logic board problem? Did I miss some other options to try?

Thanks.
