 Post subject: question about upgrading ram

so if i have 512mb ram right now and buy another 1gig would that be at 1.5 ish ram right?
or would i have to use one or the other? or buy two 1gig cards to have it work properly.

sorry such an ignorant question, ive just never done anything to upgrade a cpu before.

Assuming you have an ALPB since you put the question here, the short answer to your question is that you do not need to match pairs of memory modules. Most likely your AL PB shipped with 512MB Ram but it was in two ram slots of 256MB each.
Buying 1GB ram on a single DIMM, will allow you to upgrade your RAM and if your shipped configuration is what I suspect, when done you'll have 1.25GB RAM.
