PB G4 17" LCD replacement

I am one of the many people with vertical nicely coloured lines over my 17" PB G4. OK, I need to replace the LCD. Mine is a 1440x900 pixels.
The big question: can I replace this with a 1600xsomething LCD? Will that work, or do I need to replace the video controller as well then? Or will it not work at all?
As I need to waste some $$, I might as well get an upgrade for it as well... right?
Anyone any experience?

all of the LCDs on the 17" are the same.. your main logic board is the determining factor on what resolutions it can do but there are several other parts you'd have to replace as well so it isn't worth it as you'd be looking at well over $1k to change so you might as well just put it towards a macbook pro.
