will it not read any DVD disk? (i.e. a DVD movie)
If it is just a problem with writing a disk, make sure it is a blank DVD-R and not a DVD+R. The UJ-816 only supports -R. I believe it should be able to "read" +R's though.

Also, were you previously able to burn DVDs? If so and it just stopped working, it is likely your drive has gone bad and will need replacement. We well replacements at our online store.
