Backlight doesn't work on ipod touch 8g 2nd generation

Hi
When I recently turned on my ipod, I noticed the backlight wasn't working. The next day it was but for the last three days it hasn't. It still plays my music but it's difficult to use because of the lack of light. It hasn't had any direct water damage but I did used to keep it in my sports armband after jogging, so maybe it got into contact with some sweat (nice)! It is out of warranty but any suggestions to why it isn't working and how it could be fixed would be welcome (the cheaper, the better).

most of the time these get wet by sweat going down the headphone jack. It is really hard to say what you'll need without opening it up and checking the moisture sensors. Worst case is a logic board.
