Hi, my iPod 4th Gen. 40 GB, recently showed the "Sad iPod" icon and neither the 5 R's (or 6 with the ramming it on the desk) nor Disk Mode, nor Diagnostic Mode was possible. I took out the HDD, put it into an external USB casing, reformatted it, put it back into the iPod - still the same sad face. I bought a new HDD and a new logic board - installed both - still the sad iPod icon. What else could that be?

In addition: when I connect the iPod to the charger now, it displays the Apple, I hear the HDD spinning, and then it goes to the sad face and the HDD stops spinning. That in sequence - Apple, HDD spins, sad iPod, HDD stops - continues until I disconnect the iPod from the charger.

The hard drive cable is the only other thing.
