used iPod model A1019 (20 GB)

I purchased a used iPod model A1019 (20 GB) and the menu appeared to work fine at first, however; I hooked it up to my
pc with Windows Vista and was advised that I needed to re-format the hard drive fo the system to read it. I did. I could download music to it...the problem is that I cannot get the menu back and play it...I can only use it like an external hard drive. What do I need to do to get my menu back? My OS tells me that I have the most updated drive for this device.
