question about broken ipod

i have a broken ipod that needs to be fixed. it is a first generation ipod nano. I can see that the screen is cracked but it is not lighting up, is there a way that i could tell if it is just the screen or if there is something else wrong in addition to the cracked screen. also when i hook up my ipod to the computer, the nano starts to make a very quiet screeching noise.

any help would be great

That is hard to say. I would say go ahead and replace the LCD and see if it is fine. The noise can pretty much only be the LCD or the logic board. If it is the logic board, you are better off buying a new or refurb ipod.
