I have the 1st generation of the Macbook Air. Serial #: W881188DY51

I purchased a new hard drive from this website. I have connected a USB CD and purchased snow leopard. During the install screen, it doesnt show the new hard drive. What can I do? How do I format it? It is connected properly. Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

You will need to format it before the OS installer will see it. You did this using the Tools menu at the top and choosing Disk Utility. Here you will be able to erase and format the drive.

open Disk Utility, choose hard drive, click Erase tab, then Erase.
