Nine days ago, my display started acting up — it flickers to a nearly unreadable light green. Maybe worth nothing, but I've tracked this for the past nine days: of 27 times I've had the computer on for more than 1.5 hours, it's happened 11 times, never in less than 1.5 hours, and 8 times it’s gone more than 3.0 hours (twice of those more than 5.0 hours) without happening. I've also found if I re-position the screen it goes back to normal for varying lengths of time, which makes me wonder whether it’s the connection, or simply the monitor is failing.
I'd really appreciate any clues; this is a 4-year old 400 mhz.

Sounds like a display cable issue. That is where I would start. The part is available from the link below:

Thanks! Your advice was right on, and great timing too.
You encouraged me to be more attentive in that direction which made me realize that repositioning the display ALWAYS affected how this problem manifested. So I had much more confidence that the problem was related to the connection, a day in advance of when I had arranged for a Mac tech I hadn't done business with before to conclusively diagnose this.
I didn't think to ask whether the damaged part was the exact part you directed me to, but the tech said he slightly rearranged some wires and placed some tape over a worn spot on one. Total cost: $50.
Thanks also to those who read my post with the intention of helping if possible.
